yeah. my first INTEL build. heck....its my first build ever.
i got everything i need i think. well, the parts will arrive later on today via UPS and my powersupply will arrive tomorrow (hopefully psu comes today too!!!)

so far, since my first post days ago you guys have been great information wise. i have a laptop already online is there anyone that can maybe go on standby on aim/yahoo in case i have questions?
or should i just post the questions in this same thread?
i know the two things i've never done before are inserting the cpu into the slot and installing the power supply. the video card, drives, i have done before and can easily do.

thanks:beer:

i dont know exactly when the delivery will arrive, but obviously it should be here by 6pm.

correction.
i have everything BUT the power supply. UPS just delivered as soon as i made the post.
would i be able to AT THE VERY LEAST power this baby up with an old backup 300watt power supply? im assuming no...:bang head but at least i have order. i will open this baby up and at least get familiar with my parts.

what should i do first? touch some metal?

You might wish you ordered the DS3, the Nforce 5xx series boards aren't that great for overclocking. (If that is your plan)

And I'd recommend putting all of your questions in this thread. It'll get you a broader range of help, and it will also help others by seeing your problems and solutions.

any questions i will post them in this thread. in about 2 hours i should be starting my build (man....i need to clean up this room and make space)

am i going to need to change anything on the motherboard? i notice from the label that mother supports up to ddr2 667 and my memory is dd2 800.
will it run if i just stick the memory in and boot?
no tweaking necessary?

Yeah the memory will run fine but not at the rated DDR2-800 unless you change that in the bios. I think it will run around 260mhz if the CPU multi on those E6300s are 7x.

is there ANYTHING that i need to do once its all put together?
im still waiting on my power supply before i do anything.

or do i just plug everything in and install windows?

do i need to touch the bios at all? can i just let things run at default settings or will ANYTHING need to be modified before i can install os?

theres no definite answer as to whether youll have to change anything in the bios, its different for every build. I would go into the bios and make sure everything is running at stock settings (voltages, ram speeds and timings, fsb etc). Im not sure if this goes for the lower c2ds but my 6600 (and the rest of the world's) came with the multiplier set lower than its supposed to to so be sure to check and fix that if youre not getting a proper cpu clock.

The biggest piece of advice for a first build that im sure anyone would agree with is: take your time and ask questions! But you seem to be doing that very well :)

Do things step by step and everything should go smoothly.

I personally wouldnt mess with the bios too much until Windows is installed. Once it is, check to make sure everything is running the way it should be. Check your cpu speed, ram timings, voltages, etc..

EDIT: However, you will probably have to go into the BOIS to mess with boot settings though before you install windows

2 questions:

1--how do i apply the thermal paste? the cpu comes in a box. the cpu is on the side in its own package area and there is also a heatsink. there are instructions on how to install the cpu. there are instructions on how to install the heatsink. i dont see anything about the thermal paste, unless i rushed through the reading. also....HOW do i apply the thermal paste? i think i read a sticky somewhere so i will find it and read it in the meantime. not sure if it was on this board...

2--2nd question. i want to get the gigabyte ds3 instead of this board. if i install cpu and everything else, will i be allowed to return this board and get the gigabyte board instead? i think ordering this board was a mistake on my part....UNLESS there wont be major differences in performance. the thing that bothers me is that the motherboard is stated to support ddr2 up to 667 and my memory is 800. the ds3 is 800 also. although i dont know how that will affect my performance, i thought i'd cover all my bases in regards to the memory support. i STILL dont know the difference between the two boards in regards to the memory support. will newegg allow me to return it?

***edit to question #1.***
i found this step by step from the artic silver website. http://www.arcticsilver.com/ins_route_step2intelas5.html --> the last processor on the bottom right is the instructions that i am loooking at. i think that will do fine for me?

1- First of all, I think you are using the stock heatsink. So you will have to remove the thermal pad that comes with it. You can use rubbing alcohol to do that. ~90% is best, try not to use 70% as it can leave residue and stuff. To remove it, put the alcohol on the thermal pad, then use a SOFT towel or cloth to gently rub it away. You want to make sure the bottom of the heatsink doesn't get scratched at all! Also make it completely clean, no residue or any kind (like little fibers from the towel or anything else)

Then you need to find the directions on that thermal paste you bought. In most cases I'd think you can just put a small bead in the center of the CPU heatspreader. Make it about the size of a BB (the things you shoot). Don't put too much....you want to have as little as possible without having too little. Once you have that little BB sized dot in the center, just put the heatsink on and crank it down with the built in clips. Try to gently twist the heatsink to fully work in the thermal paste. Do NOT rock it, just try to twist it back and forth (if you can, if not, don't worry)

2- I wouldn't use that board in the first place, you don't want to take any chances in not getting your money back for it. I know you want to get it running and play with it, but I would just send it back! :)

problem. here are two pictures. the first one has no remnants of paste. the second one has lil remnants from the stock paste that was on the bottom of the heatsink. i installed the cpu and then took the heatsink and placed it on top to simulate and see if it would fit properly before applying the paste. i did not know there was paste on the heatsink.

anyway, i wiped the heatsink and the paste came off. but as you can see there are smudges on the cpu and i cant seem to get it off. can i just apply new paste on top as i cant seem to get that off?? i tried wiping it off, no luck. can i moisten it (moist cloth not so wet?)

images below and sorry so big i dont have photoshop on this computer. (that's why i need to install this desktop!!!!!!!)

installed the cpu. installed memory. and HOOORAY my PSU was delivered today. and it comes in a nice lookin plastic lunch-box style "case". you are going to have to excuse the next few newbie questions cause i know i will have a few before boot up.

i had a little problem with the installation of heatsink but i think i got it fine. i misunderstood the directions, but now its fine.

now......am i to install the video card now? mobo has no onboard video. without onboard video would i be able to at least install OS, and then install video card AFTER the installation process?

thanks

**EDIT:**
i meant to say PSU....not cpu. obviously the cpu is already installed. but the psu looks nice!

ok. problem. obviously i missed something or overlooked something.
nothing is happening when i turn the power switch on the power supply unit. it just lights up, and then on the motherboard there is a green light that is lit also. see picture below.

now. i have to say that i am NOT using a case at this time. i am trying to make sure that it powers up before using a case. the problem that i can think of is that there is no power button. like im assuming the psu would be positioned in the back of the case, and then in the front there would be a button in the case that you push to turn the power of the system on. how can i simulate that without using a case? should i remove that "power" button from a case and then attach it to the motherboard to simulate the pushing of the power button? the fan on the power supply does not even move at all (but like i said before the light on the button of the psu lights up though)

again...this is my power supply http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16817128001
