Hello OCF,

I'm going to keep this short and sweet. I ask for your advice/help in deciding what parts are going to be best for a future computer regarding the limitations and specs below to the best possibility. I have a relatively good idea of whats hot and whats not these days, just want to be safe and ask.

  • My budget ~$1400.00
  • Will be used 99% as a Gaming Computer
  • I need tower, and mouse pad. (No monitor, mouse, keyboard, O/S etc.)
  • Everything must be from NewEgg
  • Please spend every dollar to its maximum potential
  • Will not be overclocked

Thanks in advance.

e6850 290
4GBs 800Mhz Ballistix 120
CM 690 CM-690 30AR
EVGA 8800GT 270
Corsair 520HX 115AR
Thermalright 120 Extreme 65
500GB Seagate 7200.11 125
IP-35 Pro 150AR
lite-on 20x burner 30
Vista 64bit Home premium OEM 105
mouse pad and fan of your choice lets say 40
total=1340

Well lets make a correction. Seeing as your not overclocking there is not much point in getting a high end HSF(In the middle of a 90 hour work week sorry). So I would scratch that and go with a Zalman 7700, seems to be a good value at $33. Depending on you tolerance for noise you may want to look at a fan controller. I like the zalman MFC1($40) myself. Those will still bring you in at the above mentioned figure. With using a software fan controller for your video card you will also have a nearly silent machine when your not gaming.

Asus P5K P35 - 130$
Q6600 - 275$
Ballistix 1GBx4 DDR2 1066 - 200$
500GB Seagate 7200.11 - 125$
DVD Burner - 30$
Case of choice - 50$
2x RadeonHD3870 1GB GDDR4 - 440$
Mouse pad of choice - 20$
Thermaltake 550w - 100$

Total - 1370$

A pair of HD3870s in Crossfire will dominate the 8800GT, and the Q6600 is just a better value.

Best of all, this system has TONS of overclocking headroom if you ever want to give it a try, just slap on an aftermarket cooler and go.

The E6850 is junk for its price. If you want dual-core, then get an E6750 and save 90 dollars.

u forgot psu.

I'd get a Q6600 instead of the e6850, or i'd just get a e6750.

I liked the first suggestion with the abit ip35pro over the X38. No point in the X38 really.

I used the X38 because of the improved PCI x16 bandwidth, but seeing as i didn't calculate the PSU, its probably best to get a P35 board.

If you don't mind me asking, please clarify why the 8800GT over the 8800GTS, there are a few options/revisions of each. Being almost a 100% gaming rig, this is the heart of the system.

The 8800GT performs slightly better than the 8800GTS 640MB, and is cooler, smaller, less power-hungry, and considerably less expensive.

the 8800GT 512mb is greater in every aspect than the 8800GTS counterpart. Now... if you were to wait for the brand NEW G92 8800GTS 512mb, then i'd say yeah that is better.

I may be able to skip the Operating System, and put another 100 towards a 8800GTX for approx the same budget.

I advised the E6850 because he stated he would not be overclocking. I agree that the Q and e6759 are better value but the 6850 will give hime better performance. More importantly he is sacrificing anything else in the system that the $90 would be better spent on.

If hes able to drop the operating system as well, he can have a Crossfire setup with a pair of HD3870s, and that would help in games 100 times more than 0.44ghz

I completely agree. If he chooses to go with a CF or SLI solution I would suggest a step up in PSU to a 620HX.

Did you listen to anything we said :bang head? Don't get the GTS...you're wasting money...get the GT...
That memory is too expensive, get Crucial Ballistix they are cheaper I believe.
That case is too expensive and cramped. Get the CM 690 (make sure you get the one without a power supply)
And you can find that PSU cheaper elsewhere

Even that seems expensive, there have been lots of sales for it lately.

Yes please get the gt. I would not say the 900 is cramped, but the wire management is a complete mess. That is why I recommended the 690 as well, but I dont think it will give much more space. I also will say again to get the ballistix. They are only $10 more a set and will OC much better than what you have selected.
