I think my harddrive is going out...

how do i tell if my harddrive is going out? the main reason i think my harddrive is going out is because i started it this morning and i hear *craaaaaassssssshh* sound and it doesnt stop, until i hit the case a couple times or shut down. Plus this computer is 3-4+ years old so i guess it could be possible. any harddrive programs that i can use to see what hd i have. (This is a compaq presario, p4 willy T_T).

Have you tried putting the drive's model number into Google?

ok i got the model number off my hd. it says "st360020a" and its a 5400rpm hd 60gb

Its a Seagate. Download and run SeaTools.

I doubt software can tell if the bearings are going bad.

He says it only happened once, that morning... So unless if it happens again, I doubt its going dead.

It just seems to happen when i turn the computer on the next morning like ill be on computer from about 9am-12pm straight (i have to take turns with brother so its not as bad as it sounds ) if it happens again tomorrow im gonna start to worry.

Run the diagnostic program and see if it finds anything wrong with the drive. Also you want to back up everything you do not want to lose just in case you are right. Thisd just because the diagnostic gives you the all clear does not mean that you are out of the woods. A mechanical problem could still be there that just has not affected the disks yet. ok thanks ill need the luck . and all i got right now to back up on is cd-r's so i guess im gonna go through about 10 cd's probally more. i dont to much since i recently formated. probally 10gigs at most.

i ran the diagnostic and it came up saying that i had one bad area on the hd. and it said that it couldnt fix it. my hd is partioned where the system_sav is about 3gigs and the rest of my hd is used for storage (55gb) or something like that. and it said that it failed on the Fat32 portion in which my storage area is used. so i suppose that the hd will be dieing soon. and the systm_sav is running ntfs for some reason (unkown to even the hd gods )

Well back up your data and try to get an RMA for the harddrive if it is still within the warranty period.
