Hey folks i want to replace the little heatsink that came on my 850 chipset, i looked at the thermaltake tiger but it only moves about 5cfm, i was wondering, do you think i could throw a thermaltake blue orb with some thermal tape on there that moves about 15 cfm i have one on my geforce chipset it and it runs nice there so i was considering buyin another for the 850 chip, just want to get people's opinion as to what the best cooling would be and have it look decent too cause i know the chip really doesnt need much cooling its mainly eye candy. Let me hear your suggestions!
Cheers

I would stay away from the THERMAL TAPE idea as thermal tape is garbage. if you use the thermal tape, eye candy is all you are going to get.....

I would put AS on the i850 and a drop of Krazy Glue in the conners of the chip to hold the heasink down.

As for the blue ORB....
I eye candy all you want?
if you want better cooling a P3 heastink would work great. And they are cheap

for a few more bucks you can get a crystal orb that has copper base and a little better cooling the the blorb. I just got one off ebay for 14.25 If you want to wait until Thursday when I get it I'll let you know how much of a difference it makes on my Nothrbridge of my ST6

Svc sells the Crystal Orb for $9.49

If you cut a larger heatsink to the width of the hold down bracket that comes with the original sink then you can use that to hold it in place. I used an Alpha pep66 but any larger heatsink would work. You can see the northbridge sink in place in the pic with a 60mm fan positioned over it. The sink is 3 times taller and twice the base area. I used ASIII on the chip and you can reuse the foam spacer from the original sink also.

Welp the crystal orb was a bust....I can't get the holes in my motherboard to line up with the holes on the crystal orb. I ended up lapping the orb and throwing it on my Geforce card insted.

What i'm going to end up doing for my chip set is to dig up my old blue orb and see if that won't fit on there. Or I may epoxy an old pentium heat sink and fan to it. We'll see, I'm kind of bumed out that the orb didn't fit. But it's happy on my GeForce card so all is well. not a waist of money.
