Idea's for overclocking this computer

I have an older computer with some parts and I am at a loss as to what to do with it... it's a third computer, so kind of a trial and error machine.

current specs are :
Intel Pentium D 820 Smithfield socket 775 LGA 2.80GHz 90nm core voltage 1.400
2 X 512mb Kingston KRV266X64 RAM PC2100 DDR
I think timings are (in cpu Z) 2.5,3,3,6 @133mhz
Asus P5PE-VM Rev 1.00
Bios 1406
ATI All In Wonder Radeon 7500 64MB AGP 4X/2X

The computer runs a bit sluggish in all aspects, is the 1gig ram holding me back? Should i just add another gig, or should i put in more powerful ram?

Can i put in more powerful ram, i think the board only supports pc21/27/3200 but not 100%. Not sure if it only supports DDR either?

I do have another spare vid card ati radeon pro 128mb, which i think is 8x AGP, and i do have 1gig of pc3200 ram...but its two 512 sticks as well.

Does anyone have any recommendations or ideas as to what they might do with a setup like this? Or any other cheap modifications I can make with all/some of the parts I already have.

Discuss away, and I will chime in with my thoughts as well, once I see the direction this goes, since, too be honest, I can't find much about this board anywhere on here.

2 things i would do, first get more ram. 1gig is really low esp if on xp, 2k isnt so bad but still responds to more. after that i would try running a higher fsb, like 200 or 266 if possible. check out asus spec page for supported ram tough, if you do light gaming you can get a 3850 agp card. that is if newegg lists it, havent looked. other then that the only other cards to look for would be the 7800GS or 1900XT card in agp.

thanks for the input. I figured the ram was slowing me down......

here is what it states in CPU Z

Core speed 2800 MHz
multiplier 14X
Bus Speed 200 MHz
Rated FSB 800MZH

IIRC it states that 2gigs is max amount of ram

Upon closer look at the specs, it supports up to 8X AGP, which means I could dump an ATI Radeon Pro 128mb card I have kicking around in it......

only 2 gigs of ram though, DDR 400. So I could have 2 X 1gig sticks of something in there since there are only two slots...

states the FSB can be OC'ed to 1066????? or perhaps it can just handle a processor capable of that FSB?????

1GB is not low for XP...

Unless your gaming 1GB is fine for general browsing/AIM/etc.


I personally wouldn't venture any more dough into this rig.

the processor is still ok.
I still run mine in a P5WD2 board. OC's well enough (almost an extra ghz). Unforunately swapping out the mobo would mean ram and vid card would have to change and you would most likely need an adapter for your psu (unless it is already 24pin)

I'm with james though 1 GB is more then sufficient for XP. I also wouldnt put anymore money into it considering it appears to be DDR 1 and those prices have stayed up there bumping up the ram wont help much.

I suspect other things are slowing you down. When is the last time you formatted? What type/speed/size is the hard drive?

You *might* see a *marginal* improvement with the pc3200 ram though it wont break any land-speed records

Well, I just reformatted twice in the last week. But the computer is lagging bigtime....

I have no conflicts, no spyware, no hijacking etc etc..... and your right, 1GB ram has always been enough......

It's not my router......my HD are 7200rpm which isn't fast, but certainly enough for the time. I have a sata drive hooked up

I agree that dumping more cash into this rig isn't a *smart* plan, but the lagging is driving me nuts and I am at a loss to explain it
