Hi guys....

I'm going to be building a small cube case for using as an mp3 and movie server.I think i'll construct the case out of 5/8" mdf...i have a sheet sittin in my shop..It has to fit in a small space, so i'm prolly gonna pick up a VIA mini itx mobo, throw a few hundred gigs of hard drive space in it, and just buy a DVD drive for it.

Those that have done it, what was your final overall size?

What PSU? I'm thinking of just gutting my spare 300 watt unit.

I'd like to just use my tv for a monitor, but i might pick up a 5.6" lcd unit and mount it in the front of the cube.Any ideas about this? What did you do?

I'm still searching for ideas and stuff, so i figured i'd ask here before i got carried away.

if you have pics you wanna email, send them to [email protected]

Thanks

Ok, so i ordered a VIA Eden motherboard.....

I am going to build a case similar to this:
http://www.overclockers.com/articles647/ ,except mine will be a little larger so i can get some cooling for my hard drives.I'm thinking 3 60mm fans across the bottom front blowing on my drives. So far i have a 30 gig 7200 rpm WD for mp3's, and i'll buy a BIG drive for AVI's...

Who makes a slim, slot load dvd drive? I really want a slot load for this because i might put 2 in it because many movies are on 2 disks, and i'm lazy.....

If you need any design help I designed and built my own clear case...

Slot load slim drives are going to be VERY VERY hard to find and may not even be compatible with the IDE adapters you'll need to use.

im also interested in a cube project, but i dont really have any easy way to make my own box, anyone know where i could get one made, and im assuming alluminum would be the easiest for modding? i just want a cube that has 5 sides instead of 6 and the fith side is where i slide the mobo attatched to a plate that would close it.

Aluminum is harder to tool than Polycarbonate plastic. But aluminum is cheaper in bulk (1/16th" x 12" x 12" = $5.71 x 6 = $34.26). For a labor fee I would be willing to build a box for you. I would however need to know ALL of the parts you plan on putting inside.

As soon as mine is done i will post pics.I have a really neat idea for a box with a slid in mobo tray made of 1/8" aluminum. My main case will be 5/8" MDF. MDF is really nice stuff to work with....just remember to always drill pilot holes.....

Pics to come in one week

i have had my main cube built, i will get it tommorow afternoon, this is the design i am going for.
http://www27.brinkster.com/elekt/cube.htm

the case is 1 foot each direction and will be held together by screws going into a nylon or acrylic block

so far i have a 32x cdrom i will use and a 4x cd-r (they will be temporary until i get more funds to upgrade)

i also have a 466mhz intel celeron that will be temporary with a compaq (EEEEEEEEEKKKKKK!!!) motherboard that will also be temporary.

i have a blue cold cathode that will also be installed to help further light the case.

thanx to captain slug for the design help

UPDATED PICS
and i have a question, is my cip a celeron 466mhz? thats what i think it is. but i havent checked yet. im pretty sure because it ends with 466 and i read that somewhere.
