ok So Im on Ubuntu Dapper Drake...trying to get Beryl to work, having problems getting AiGLX since it;s recomended can;t find a repository. That aside.....

Edgy Eft seems to be the new release...can anyone tell me about this...any major changes?...is it a good upgrade?...and why doesn;t apt-get update see it? The Beryl Wiki says AiGLX is preloaded with Edgy Eft.

on debian at least, you need to have 96xx+ nvidia drivers, so you need to enable nonfree and something else in apt...i'm sure the beryl wiki has more details

I got it working with XGL.....weird thing is beryl as the command won;t start it....but beryl-manager it works

definitely install the nvidia 9xxx drivers if you have a nvidia card. And using beryl-manager is what you are supposed to start it with. Once you install the new nvidia drivers, there are a few extra lines you need to add to xorg.conf, but it should all be in the ubuntu wiki. if it'd not, you can find it in the debian wiki or possibly the beryl wiki.

better than XGL or better than using the NVIDIA acceleration?

the way i understand it, XGL, compiz, and beryl are window managers. I think XGL is close to a full replacement of xorg. AiGLX and nvidia are the drivers used to display them. people with nvidia cards will have to add a special compositing line to their xorg.conf, and people who use ati or other cards will have to add different lines to enable aiglx. i don't know if aiglx is better than nvidia, or the other way around, or if they are the same but different. But, I would say if you have an nvidia card you don't need to worry about aiglx, and you won't miss it.

Oh..well actually XGL is an X window server like xorg...and I thought AiGLX was another open GL based X server like XGL but yeah your probably right that it's a driver....Beryl and compiz are the window managers.

XGL gives you much better performance.

XGL needs its own session.

AIGLX will run in gnome.

One my laptop XGL takes 20-40% of the cpu. I was plaining on switching to AIGLX...But if XGL is better maybe I need to mess with the settings.

XGL seems to run fine speed wise on my desktop but that has a 7600 GT KO so.....my laptop with an X700 would be a better test.....a few bugs XMMS doesn;t like to move down lower than the halfway point on the screen:rolleyes:
