Intel Knights Mill Xeon Phi: what was this product?

Was Knights Mill a CPU or a bundled motherboard w/CPU? Also what exactly was the 16GB of high-bandwidth MCDRAM? Did it serve the same purpose as the eDRAM on the i7-5775c? It looks like you could add new sockets to the motherboard(?)?

The Knights series were vector focused CPUs. Basically what you might end up with if you asked me what I wanted for Prime95-like workloads. The series introduced AVX-512 and featured a lot of cores. The cores were weak at anything not AVX-512 though, being based on atom. Basically it is like a drag racer. Put the biggest vector unit (AVX-512) on it, with as little as possible to support it working. It would then have the same problem I have: feeding it with data fast enough. Hence the on chip storage.
