Does anyone have a clue as to the type to motherboard that comes with a Dell computer and a PII 400-450 chip?

It's a safe bet that it's a 440BX. It's proprietary, so Dell is all there is regarding Bios updates. Let's hope it'll run a PIIIE, if you use a Slocket. In truth, there's little difference between PII's and PIII's-- as long as we leave overclocking out of the picture.
