What’s with this temperature measuring and measuring of the vcore?

I have a p4 2.0a on a th7ii-raid motherboard. System is Windows XP. I use the .38 bios for standard speed and the .77 for 2.4MHz.

2.0MHz with standard settings in bios:
Temperature is approximately 40-42C at idle.
Temperature is approximately 55-57C with prime95 running for half an hour.
VCore shows approximately 1.39V when it should have been 1.5V.

2.0MHz @ 2.4MHz with 1.85V setting in bios and agp/pci set to FIX:
Temperature is approximately 44-46C at idle.
Temperature is approximately 62-64C with prime95 running for half an hour.
VCore shows approximately 1.6V when it should have been 1.85V.


I can live with that, its completely stable, and I can touch the cobber plate on my swiftech mcx478b without burning any fingers. Even if it says 64C.

The funny thing is, when I use an external temperature measuring tool at the cobber plate close to the core, I get a 20C in different. It shows 42-44C when mbm or hwdoctor shows 62-64C.

I haven’t measured VCore in other ways. But something is clearly wrong with Abits pc health!

Any other has any comments on this subject?

i never trust the thermistors used my Mobo manufactures

thats what MBM and PC health are reading

to be honest, you need to place the thermistor or thermal couple on the die or as close to it for accurate results

with the intel you won't be able to , as the die is protected by the shell

The TH7-II is well known to have a lower measured vcore than the BIOS setting. No way should you be getting that high of CPU load temps with a Swiftech. You might consider reinstalling the heatsink again. Clean up the thermal paste and reapply it. Maybe it all got squeezed off when you first installed the heatsink. Those big heavy coolers are hard to keep from moving around until you get the bolts all started. Measuring the temp of the heatsink base will always run lots lower temp than the actual CPU core temp.

I have tried reapplying thermal paste on the swiftech 4 times... both with as2 and as3. I even tried the retail cooler with as2 and as3. Same result.. The swiftech was a few degrees lower than the retail.

Also, my case temp measured in the middle is at 28-30C.

For the VCore - what should i go for, the bios setting, or the actual measured values by pc health?

I go by the actual measured vcore. With my TH7-II, it runs a fairly consistant 0.1v lower than the BIOS setting. Make sure you have the fan blowing into the heatsink (label should be facing down).

I just installed a Dragon 478 and I am getting the same temps that Nonsense is getting. I have also tried reinstalling the the Heatsink. I spent 3 hours making sure I did it right.
My temps are 45c idle and 54c load. There is no way the reading is correct.

I was getting similar temps with the retail HSF setup with ASIII. I have since put on a huge Alpha. Now the first install of my alpha got me a little lower temps. I then reapplied the ASIII following their instructions. This is very important to follow. Here's how I applied it later and I got much better readings. First I cleaned everything off with a compound called "Goof Off", very excellent stuff even if it really smells. Then I used a plastic sandwich bag on my finger to rub the ASIII on the bottom of the heatsink very hard. This produced a very fine "wetting" of the heatsink and it looks like nothing's there. Then I used my thumb in the sandwich bag and applied a very thin and even layer to the CPU. It was so thin you could see through it just slightly. When you mate the surfaces together you might think there is not enough on them but you can feel them cling together. This produced a 4 - 5 degree celsius drop in my temp readings compared to a heavier application of ASIII.
I am running at 1.76 actual CPU voltage at 2.4Ghz.
My mobo temp is 28-30C
My idle CPU temp is 39 - 41C
My full load CPU temp is 48 - 50C

Before my range was 45C - 58C

Thanks for the info Gone_fishing. I guess I will once again go through the process. I actually followed the same instructions. I am not to thrilled with doing it again, but I will just to see.
