simply load up mobile safari on your Iphone ( or ipad ), and go to the website
http://jailbreakme.com/ Then slide the "Slide to jailbreak" slider. And wait a couple minutes. Cydia will then be installed on your springboard.
It's literally THAT simple. No CFW's to mess with, no downloading any programs.
this site supports multiple devices and firmware's...Here's a list.
* iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G running iOS 4.0 / 4.0.1 / 3.1.3 / 3.1.2
* iPad iOS 3.2.1 and iPad iOS 3.2
* All iPod Touches iOS 4.0 / 4.0.1 / 3.1.3 / 3.1.2
I've already done this on my Iphone 4. Everything works just fine. Cydia opens up, and installs everything just fine. MMS is working fine as well. Haven't tried face-time yet, but commentors on reddit are saying it's working fine.
Some people on reddit who are using the 3GS with the 4.0.1 firmware lost MMS capabilities after they jailbroke though. No report ( that I've seen ) about any problems on the older 3G. If you are still using a 3GS, jailbreaking is up to you. These MMS problems may only affect a small percentage of people.
God, I'm so glad to have SBSettings back! along with my custom text alert sounds!
One bit of advice. TURN OFF AUTO-SYNC or whatever it's called in Itunes. If you don't, MAKE SURE YOU CANCEL THE AUTO-SYNC/BACKUP when it starts. ( click the x at the top of the Itunes screen ). Or it will create a backup of your JB'd phone. Which then, getting MMS/Face-time to work will become a total pain in the A**. So simply, do NOT let it backup your phone once you JB'd it ( at least, not until AFTER you fix the MMS/face-time problem. )
EDIT: Restoring from a backup should fix the MMS/Face-time issues that people are having with this jailbreak. ( directly from Comex's twitter. He's the guy who created this jailbreak ).
EDIT:#2. Ok, I was confusing SMS with MMS. this jailbreak DOES break the ability to send MMS ( send pics/vids ) on all devices ( evidently ). So simply do a backup before you jailbreak. Once you jailbreak, sync your phone to iTunes, and restore from that backup. It won't mess with your jailbreak, as restoring from backups only messes with settings, pics, documents...etc. It doesn't actually mess with the firmware. I just did this, and it does work. MMS is back up and working fine.
Remember, Restore from BACKUP. in Itunes, right click your iphone on the left of Itunes, and click "Restore from Backup". Don't do a normal restore, as that will put your phone back to factory settings.
EDIT:#3. Ok, some people are having problems using the restore from backup utility ( some people backed up their Iphone AFTER it was jailbroken, or had some other odd errors ). A couple of people have found another work around.
go into Cydia, and add a new source. add this URL. http://iphonedelivery.advinux.com/cydia/ From that source, install Iphonedelivery. evidently, it's a french program that gives you extra texting options. but many people have had luck using it to get back their MMS. Personally, I don't use MMS all that much. So it's not a huge problem for me. A new JB will be out with a fix ( or an update in Cydia ).
Well, headed to work now. Won't be able to update this post with new info until morning. Good luck everyone.
