Is a 92mm Tornado bareable @3360rpm?

The tornado when throttled to a lower speed is always going to be louder than a fan that runs that speed at 12V. I know this because I use the 92mm and 80mm Tornado for heatsink testing and regularly PWM it from 5-100%.

The Tornados are serious fans and there will always be motor and bearing noise from them. It's a relatively low frequency (the high pitch of the fans full speed is from air moving lol) and sounds kinda mean. But it's definitely not quiet. Not sure exactly what heatsink you are using, but here is a 92mm Tornado compared to a lot of other 80 and 92mm fans on a thermalright 947U:

Tip: think about how much noise you can stand and then size the fan accordingly. This is more effective (in noise/cooling terms) than using fan controllers on loud fans.

koolaid, you should really listen to this guy, i have the same experience.

at first i thought that downvolting a 80mm tornado was going to be both silent and powerful, well its still powerful downvolted but noisy too. Not to mention downvolted its not powerful because of its speed, but only because its wideness. Bottomline is that tornados are only meant to work at full speed. At the same noise tornados make downvolted, some fans push more air and are more silent, because thats what they are designed for. Some examples are the panaflos and the 92mm sanyo denki fan i have in my cpu. Just drop the downvolted tornado idea, trust me, get a sanyo denki at sidewindercomputers.com instead, it has rpm monitoring too and its supported by a motherboard :D

I listened to the sanyo denki soundclip, and that booger is quiet given the CFM it pushes.

I'm not going to have an insane overclock on this system, so maybe a more conservative fan would be my best bet. You are right - it would be nice to let the mobo control the fan, versus having to take up an extra drive bay for a fan controller.

I read a bunch of posts where you have recommended the sanyo denki fans, and you are right. They are pretty quiet.

Thanks for the suggestion. My PC sits 1 foot from my right ear, so the tornado might be too dang loud.

its up to you, but the tornado is too noisy... believe all the guys in the forums, it might save you $20 noisy bux... just go for the sanyo denki ;)

All of the posts about Tornados being 1) designed for high flow, and 2) very loud, are correct.

A tornado at 1ft will cause permanent hearing damage over time.

I went with a Sanyo Denki Mini Ace 25. It is rated at 30dba, and 44 cfm. I just plugged it into the mobo, and it's not even audible.

I'll post results when the SP-94 gets here.

this is not a joke and i'm bead serious,
if you're thinking about a tornado fan, do this
get a hair dryer turn it to med. setting and lay it beside your case
and if it dosen't get on your nerves go for it.

Are you sure about that? I have a 92mm tornado running at full blast about 1.5-3ft away from me when i am using my computer and i havnt gotten any side effects yet.

As people earlier said you do get used to it but you cant sleep with it on. You also notice a huge diffrence when it is turned off.

Well, it runs at 68dBA according to the manufacturer, and I have confirmed it myself with a sound level meter. Anything over 85 dBA can damage your hearing. So, it is not directly causing loss. What it is doing is preventing your ears from "resting". Everyone is exposed to noise over 85dBA every day, and if there is enough quiet time between these exposures, you'll be fine. If you spend a lot of time at a computer with a Tornado running, you don't get that quiet time.

In the end it's your call, and they're your ears. IMO it is dangerously loud. Dangerous or not, it is annoying as all hell, and that alone is enough for me.

Well read my thread I like it loud but cool. My 92 is all full speed plus I have 5 80mm vantec case fans plus a dual fan ps. Like I said, it's noisy but it's not bothersome and I can sleep in the same room. But I'm also used to artillary and mortars and 50 cals going off in the background so whats a little noise from some fans. Whada say? Huh? Doh, forgot to remove my ear plugs, mmm or did I forget to replace my hearing aid battery.

Fold for a cure!

Hooah!
