A while back my computer started making a weird noise as if were a failing fan but it would come and go so i never checked into it. 1 day for whatever reason i dont remember i had to restart it. Well it didnt want to boot back up. It would just recycle by showing the first post screen then restarting. I then turned it on its side , removed the side panel , pushed the power button and it booted into windows fine. Soon as stood it up it would shut down. All the fans were working fine. Well i said screw it and left it on its side. Next thing i know after running it on its side for a couple of months it didnt want to restart for whatever reason why i tried i dont know again. Now i started disconnecting all the drives except 1 to see if it would boot but no. Then i removed the cpus/heatsinks to clean them. I installed 1 at first and it booted fine. Great i thought! I installed the 2nd and it wouldnt boot. Meanwhile i was getting a long beep. I thought it was a memory beep code. So i tried each of two sticks seperately. It didnt matter if i had either one or both installed i got the same results. I ran memtest and returned no errors after about 30 minutes of running it. Weird thing is once in awhile when it does that long continous beep it will still start into windows then fade away. I tried both cpus in the 1 socket and each work fine but just not the other socket. 1 time it did start into windows with 2 cpus but BSOD with memory_management error.

I personally never heard of a socket failing but i'm wondering if it is possible. The warranty is up and i cant find another ncch-dl anywhere to try exchanging it out.

ASUS Ncch-dl
2 x 1 gig mushkin pc3200
2 x 3.2 gig intel xeon
550 watt PSU
2 x 37 gig raptors
1 160 gig seagate
never overclocked and built this over 4 years ago

Have you tried swapping the failing *socket* with the other cpu to see if it may actualy be a cpu problem instead?
