is the ASUS A7A266 Ali 1647 good? the good thing is that it takes both sdram and ddr ram and is much cheaper than the simple ASUS A7A266...

I have the A7A266 and I like it. BUT, do NOT use DDR ram and regular SDRAM together....reg ram uses 3.3 volts and ddr uses 2.5 so you can fry your ddr if you do!

I would be interested in seeing some side by side comparisons of the ALI chipset and 760\761 chipset.

I have'nt heard anything bad about the A7A 266. Most people seem to be very happy with it's stability and overclockability (I don't think thats a word :))

My A7A & 1.2gig T-Bird should be here on monday. I'm pretty excited to start playing around with it. I have built one AMD system and that was for my dad. But I havent really done any tweaking or overclocking with it. So this will be a whole new experience for me. BYE BYE Intel!

you can get a rough idea of comparisons with sandra

i believe the amd 760 chipset outperforms the ali chipset, but only by a small margin. and the difference in price (a7a266=Ali, A7M266=AMD) was about $40 when I bought this one and I already spent too much on a 1.4 ghz chip that day =p

if you do get the a7a266 make sure the one you get has 10 dip switches (lower right hand corner of the mobo) some only have 4 switches, but you have to have 10 switches to change the multiplier

Good choice!

I think I have read that in gaming the ALI chipset will have a slight advantage over the 760 though. But I could be wrong. Personally I think (although I have no experience) the difference would be so minimal that you would'nt notice it in real world use.

in reality a lot of the best stuff has no real advantage over #2...for instance SB live x-gamer vs SB live platinum...the only difference i've ever heard of is the live drive....

Good luck with your new mobo!

If your referring to the A7A being just a low budget board compared to the A7M, Thats not really true. They are two entirely different chipsets all together. It's not like comparing a Soundblaster live to a Soundblaster live value.
Not in MO anyway.

I know and I'm not saying they are the same (but SB Live x-gamer and platinum are). I'm just saying that in all reality you don't see a lot of performance difference. It's like the difference between 1.33 ghz and 1.4 ghz...there IS a difference and you know it's there but it's so minimal that it's negligible
