I'd recently put my new computer together, and had an XP 2000+ with an alpha Pal 8045 and a Vantec tornado.. It idled around 42c and was 45c on load.

I replaced the cpu with an XP 2200+, lapped the heatsink while I was at it.. and now load is 38c.

I accepted the fact that lapping a heatsink was helpful, but that much? It lowered the load temp 7 degrees.. is that all lapping, or is some of it going from a palamino core to a tbred?

Ok.. that made more sense than my uber-lapping theory.. Now I see how people can stay under 40c when before I was stuck around 43.
