Is this too high?

I have overclocked my xp 1700+(1467) to 2000+(1650)+ it is running stable at 150mhz fsb. But the temparature is at full load 48 degrees. My probe says it is 50.6. But are these temps alright or too high?

I would get a new HSF. The thermalright AX-7 is great and so is the SK6. Also the Vocano7+ is a great HSF. The temps are a little too high in my opinion. I have my 1600 at 1.57 ghz with the AX-7 and my load temp is 35 degrees.

just to clear up somthing on the PR rating the 2000+ runs at 1.67 ghz:D and those tems are i lil high

dont worry about the heat this little processor can handle a lot how ever if it does get to hot the processor will actually slow down so it does not burn up much like the p4.

Uh, Mr. $T$, as far as anyone here knows, AMD processors do NOT slow down to take care of the heat. Please be careful what you post... It could leave someone with a fried processor.

Those temperatures are a wee bit high. You could probably get away with running it at those temperatures, but I, personally, would get better cooling.

No you misunderstood, the chip will slow down enough so it is harder to fry, no chip immortal.

But the temps are a little high for a xp Bigger fan and heat sink that should fix the problem.

I went ahead and checked. ONLY P4's have this protection. P3's, P2's, celerons, athlons, durons, t-birds, and athon XP's WILL CONTINUE TO RUN AT TOP SPEED HOWEVER HOT THEY ARE UNTIL THEY CRASH OR FRY.

Now, apparently, some new motherboards WILL include protection that shuts off amd cpus if the temperature rises extremely rapidly. This is a feature of the MOTHERBOARD. NO old motherboards have it, and I doubt many new ones do, considering that the 1900xp was out before AMD even came up with the idea. If it doesn't say that the board has this protection, then it doesn't. Anyways, this will SHUT OFF, not slow down, the processor.

I suggest you upgrade your hsf to be on the safe side.
It never hurts to run a cooler chip.

I just installed a new MSI Turbo 2 and a AMD 1700 XP. I was quite concerned when I saw the temp was running around 55 deg C, so I started making some calls. According to AMD and the local techs, the 1700XP should be able to handle over 70 deg C easily. Anyone have any info contrary to that? Mine is running around 60 deg C with a Volcano fan at full load using Sandra. I dont have it extremely overclocked yet, but I am working on it little by little. ;)

The hotter you get, the more likely it is to crash... especially when overclocked. You may be able to get away with about 55-65C under load, but much higher will crash it. It isn't likely to run long over 70C. AMD factory specs say the CPU will survive 90C for short periods of time. This doesn't mean it will run that hot, just that it won't hurt it. Overvolted processors can be damaged even at cool conditions, so don't go too far with that. A good rule of thumb is 50C under load or less.

I second that and I believe one of the new asus mobos supports the auto shutdown and it apparently works. The Athlon, Duron, T-birds DO NOT support this within the processors. Do also consider that the thermisor usually does not touch the chip and it definately does not touch the core and does get some air flow and then there is the question of its calibration. What AMD told you is correct and should it fry they will tell you that it exceeded max temp and they will be correct even though you may have never shown a temp that hot. 50c max. Maybe a little foray on occasion in the 50 to 55c but definately 50 and below with any regularity. You got my vote Caffinehog.

I also have an Xp 1700+ but i have got the AGOIA-Y core   .
I am running this chip on 1830 Mhz ... but at idle it is 43C and full load its over 50 C  .
I think 18.. is the max Aircooling can pull.

My temps are higher but its very important that you have a good airflow.
