my computer is a duron800 on a gigabyte ga7zmmc motherboard but im having trouble finding where to set the multiplier can anyone suggest a place to look or am i banging my head against a brick wall

my other computer is an old ibm/cyrix p120 chip and i can only get it up to 160mhz (any higher and it just wont fire up) is that all i can go to ?

cheers for any and all suggestions

ps the duron is running stable at 904 with the cpu bus at 113 but im always keen to learn more

first off, have you unlocked the multiplier? You can change it till you do. Second, check your manual, somewhere in that treasure trove of info will be where to change the multi.

ive read the manual at least 3 times plus skimming through to the relevant points and i cant find a single mention of it. the motherboards utility disk comes with a program called easytune3 but upon installation it says its incompatible with my motherboard(which is strange seeing as the disk is for my board) the closest mention to anything like it is a setting in the bios 'chipset feature setup' menu labled as configure timing by speed and not knowing exactly what it does I wont play with it

thanks for the input though

That timing thing you refer to in the chipset features probaby has something to do with your RAM timings or the such, not CPU speed.

Like dunno260 said, check to be sure your CPU is not muliplier locked...most are. The way to tell is by changing multiplier settings and nothing happening (the obvious way, lol), or by looking at the CPU and seeing if the dots labeled L1 are connected. If they are then your CPU is unlocked, if not then you need to unlock your CPU.

Also, check your manual again...it should have info on multiplier settings...probably not far from the section on setting the FSB. Also look on your board for a set of 4-5 jumpers, or maybe dipswitches (not sure waht Gigabyte uses).

Aside from that, the only thing I can think is that the gigabyte board has no multiplier settings and just uses the default locked cpu settings...that may be the case, but like i said, i'm not familiar with the board.

When the boards first came out it was either FIC or Gigabyte that cut off the jumper leads for the multiplier settings (this is a really old memory...anyone know what i'm talking about and can back me up?)...the result of this was no multiplier settings but the contacts for the jumper leads could still be seen in the board...

Well, hope that helped some. Good luck!

Forgot to mention: Welcome to the forums.

If you notice we have different categories, so try to post in the correct ones. For instance, this thread would be best suited for "AMD motherboards". Not being a pest, but it does keep the forums cleaner and more organized, plus your question may get answered more specifically in that category.

Again, welcome to our forum and we hope you stay!

I know that some of the Gigabyte boards do not have the ability to manually adjust the multiplier. I do not know which ones though. Somewhere I saw an article about how to modify a Gigabyte so you could change those settings.

Ok, I think it was Gigabyte then...the way to modify it is simply to find the headers on the mainboard for the jumper leads, cut some leads off an old pcb, and solder them on...tough job it looks like. Not sure where it was...might have been at anandtech...lemme check...

Found an article on Anandtech...

Here's why you can't change your multiplier:

"In order to change the multiplier, the motherboard must have certain hardware circuitry.

However, that’s exactly what the GA-7ZMM is missing, which is no surprise since Gigabyte has never released a Socket-A motherboard with multiplier settings."

That was for the GA-7ZMM, no the mmc, but should be the same....

heres the full article:

I'd reccommend getting a KT133a board...you can get the microATX's from ASUS for around 70-80 bucks nowadays...and that should be better for oc'ing...

Hope this helps!

Ive checked the chip and all Ive found is groupins called L5 L6 &L7 all of which are connected. Seeing as this was just a small experiment and I dont want to do anything serious until I get some better cooling the cpu is running at around 40 celcius Im happy to leave as is

thanks for all the input people its been enlightening
