Eagerly opened Splinter Cell: Double Agent after getting it for Christmas, only to install it and get an error message relating to not having Pixel Shader 3.0!

Tbh I can't understand it - the graphics didn't look overwhelming impressive enough to require only PS 3, and surely Ubisoft are going to lose an enormous share of the gaming market by doing this (computer game companies are still out to make money aren't they lol?)

I know my computer's getting kinda dated now, so I didn't expect to be able to play it on max settings or anything - but, still, I spent over £200 ($300+) on my X800 only a couple of years ago, and it plays other new games like FIFA '07 fine. I should be able to play it at least, you'd think.

But apparantly not, so is there anything I can do? It doesn't look like there's gonna be a PS 2.0 patch, so I'm looking at this graphics card: (the only AGP PS3 one I can find) http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-063-HT. I know I should probably build another pc for PCI-E and all that, but when/if I do that, I want to do it because I'm ready, not because some silly game forced me to.

Is that graphics card alright/is there anything I can do with my current hardware to force Splinter Cell to run? I know you guys are pretty much the experts, so if you can't help me no-one can lol.

Any help's much appreciated :)

My old 6800gs supports 3.0 just fine, if you considered the nvidia route.

Yeh, at the time I bought the X800 I got it because it was quieter than the 6800s, wish I'd gone Nvidia now lol... :(

there has been alot of threads in regards to this problem lately. SM 3.0 really should have been implemented in x-series cards. I heard that they actually are SM 3.0 capable but it was not implemented correctly, so they can only do SM 2.

to the OP... looking at your sig... That 3200XP+ should be good for at least 2.4Ghz... What stepping is it? I got my old 3200XP to 2.62 w/ 2.03v lol... but it never broke 55C, so it was ok... I think that the X1650 you linked to will work for you ok.. But I think its only 128 bit memory :( Here is link on the Egg about people's experiences with this particular card...http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814161032

It might run the game, but don't expect blockbuster performance..

Well the highest I've got it is 2.3Ghz, its a locked Barton and if I put the voltage above 1.7V it tends to just crash.

I think I've decided to go out to my local store and buy a standard Nvidia 7600 GS 256MB 128-bit GDDR2 card, as reviews I've read of it said it should give performance between 20-30fps at 1280*1024/medium settings onDouble Agent.

My question is - how will a 7600 compare to my X800? Will I, in effect, be spending £90 to downgrade for the sake of PS 3.0, or will I actually see an improvement in all games?

Thanks again :)

To be honest, the 7600 is a good deal faster then your X800 by a very large margin. Considering that it can keep up with my 6800U, I dont think you will have any problems at all with it.

I read somewhere (can't remember where) that they plan on releasing a x1950 for AGP sometime soon. Can anyone confirm this? If so...this is a "great" solution to prolong the life of your AGP mobo. I used quotations because you might be wasting money on the card since you'll need a new one with PCI-E, but that's your own choice.

Just a thought.

The proformance will be close but it will have a small edge ( not as much as you might think) but the Op will get sm3 out of it .

He can't help it if it was a gift from someone else also Splinter Cell Chaos Theory had a patch that added pixel shader 2.0 support but it already had 1.1 and 3.0. This might mean they will patch Double Agent but I can't be sure about that.

i totally changed my mind about buying this game after reading about so many people having issues with it.

that and the fact that the Coop seems to have been re-modified.

there is a program out there they can force sm2.0 but i cant remember what its called its from a .nl site.
