I just got a PIII given to me for free. It is a Costa Rica 866/256/133/1.65V SL43J.

Intel Spec Finder

It came with an ASUS CUV4X motherboard, ATI all in wonder, 256Mb ECC PC133, 40Gb drive, Audigy SB LIVE, CD-ROM, CD-RW, etc.

1) I have seen that there are a lot of people that get at least 1GHz out of the coppermines. What are my odds?
2) Is the ASUS an ok board for O/Cing? Will it get this processor to 1GHz.
3) I am going to replace the ATi with my Nvidia GeForce2 and run linux for the O/S since linux does do too well with ATI. Will this machine make an ok firewall and/or fileserver? Maybe e-mail server?
4) I am willing to put $50 into this system if anyone has any great upgrade ideas.

Thanks!

I use mine as a file server - I have XP Corp on it and 3 - 200gb hard drives in it. Works nicely, four PCs in the house but your files all stay in the same place.

Hi, if you're willing to upgrade it, you can try the tualatin way... it will be a lot of fun, plus tualatins overclock like crazy. Note that I don't know whether you have native tualatin support or you'll need to mod the socket or use an adapter though...

I don't know the motherboard...i'd say just try and see what you can get out of it.

Why not invest that 50$ in a few silent fans and some damping material? Would make it a nice silent box.

(dont forget to fold on it lol)

I don't think that mobo supports Tualatin cores.

Since there is no PCI lock on those old mobos, they run out of steam at some point above 150 FSB. I could get 153 FSB stable with my old Abit SA6/P-III 700, but much more than that the harddrive would start corrupting data.
