i am new .. it looks like KDE 3.0 out .. should i get that ..
i am runing mandrake 6.2

it was released yesterday and their FTP servers were fully loaded, maybe it is still hard to get it today too

If you are new to linux, dont try upgrading anything like KDE, GNOME, X or the kernel.

I would recomend that you download a more up to date version of Mandrake - 6.2 is pretty old, 8.2 is the newest.

LOL .. sorry i mean the new verson 8.2 ..:p

phew! I was going to ask what people were still using 6,2 for :D

I still think that you will be fine with 2,2. You could try downloading KDE 3.0, but I would install it alongside KDE 2.2, in case something goes wrong.

KDE 3.0 just looks good :D

is there a newbie site .. how to install it

the safe way

i only using linux 2 learn how it works .. understand it :p

so i will like 2 install it .. thats only way i will learn :D

Newbie tips? Go for RPMs. If possible, get the RPMs for Mandrake 8.x.

If only source is available, it is possible but slightly difficult.

33 files (180mb) .. is that correct ?? i need them all ??

Even if you dont need all the files, download them all just to be on the safe side.

Most people won't be needing the development files. you'll be able to tell which ones they are by them being the normal package that you'll need then -devel

so you wouldnt necessarily need a file like kde3-devel-3.0-mdk.i5586.rpm but you'd want kde3-3.0.mdk.rpm to install kde3...

hmm is there way 2 del other Desktop Environment . .. that i don't use .. i am startin 2 run out of hd space :(

you can run the a package manager which will let you uninstall packages, you could use something like gnorpm, or some other one, there are some more under configuration>packages or software i think... i can't remember exactly what it is... as i just hosed my system, partially. KDE3 will replace KDE2.2 when you install it, and you wont see an option to select it (KDE2.2), so once you have kde3 running you could also uninstall the kde2.2 packages... i think... you will need to logout/restartx to use kde3 though

go for ximian gnome. It totally rocks, and is very easy to upgrade from standard gnome. Well, having said that it was easy for me running redhat. I have never used this madrake stuff....

Use Mandrake's package management to remove KDE 2.2
I think it is called RPMDrake, I'm not sure.

agreed. but there are some things i like about regular gnome better too, like automount of cds, and how audio files will auto preview if you put the mouse over them. ximian doesn't do that.

jeff

that'd be it :)

even if you get kde working, i recdommend downloading ximian to see if that gives you a better liking of gnome. i prefer regular gnome anyways, but ximian makes it more pretty and adds some phat features, especially their redcarpet auto-download/update tool and their evolution email/calendar/scheduling proggy...very cool

jeff

evolution is pretty good...i preferred Gnome to KDE because for some reason KDE would not allow me to run Folding....i dont know why....

ximian does not work on mandrake 8.2

so i will wait 4 them 2 update .. i will update kde 3.0 :)
