in my case fans(i'd remove them all if i could) there are 4 fans. not sure of brand however
my problem is this high pitched sound.. the sound of something at high RPM kinda. This sound keeps me awake so i must turn my box off at night, hence cutting my folding time in half. would adding a cork or rubber gasket remove this sound, or am i stuck with it.

replace all the fans with the new master cooler ones that have the lights in em. I swear these are the best fans ive ever used.

Mounting the fans with a rubber gasket might help get rid of this noise, since the rubber would absorb most of the vibration between the spinning fan and the metal of the case.

You might also want to think about hooking your fans up to a fan controller such as this one, and using it to control the fan's RPM level so the whining noise is eliminated.

a rubber gasket or vibration absorbing foam would help, but high whistling sound is not usually associated with vibration.. the sound comes from the fan itself, motor. these are hard to deal with, but if it is an old fan you could try taking off the sticker on the motor and putting some kind of lubricant (not wd-40) which could improve it a bit. i personly use yoyo bearing lube since thats all i got and it did make my hi-rpm fans quietier.
Also what i did was get some foam, and glue it to the side panels, bottom, top, and around my fan. this dampers out the sound making some of the sound have to travel though two different medians works pretty good.

First of all make sure that the high pitch sound is from the fans. I have the same problem and it turned out that the high pitch sound comes from my two maxtor HDDs (I disconnected my fans to check where the sound comes from), I'll be addressing this issue tonight.

If you have a fan on your video card that may be the source of the whine. It was for me anyways so I replaced it with an Iceberg4. If you aren't sure, unplug your case fans and see if it makes any difference.

have you cut your fan grills out of the case, that can cause it too.

You could also try removing the wire grills over
the fans. All of mine are a bit more quiet with
them removed.
Just be sure to keep young and/or inexperienced
fingers away from the naked fan blades. ;)

Go to Wal-Mart, or any sports shop that sells rollerblades and/or skateboards. Pick up some "Bearing Lube" brand doesn't matter much, nor does quality, but if you really want to, get the best stuff.

I'd almost bet you can get the very same lubricant
in the Auto parts department for a whole lot less.
If not go to your local Auto parts store instead.

I've removed the grilles from the fans. and i have some bearing lube... some high quality stuff a friend who works on jet engines gave me for my heelys... i havent tried that yet.

i have an intergrated video, so there isnt a fan, and the only other thing beside my case fans would be my processor fan.

anyone know a good non fanned sink for a p3 ~500Mhz?
in the not so long future i'll change all the fans out with some quieter ones that flow a little more, and perhaps add some style ;)

my friend has a volcano 7 on his p3 600 @800mhz. its not fanless, but i gave him a Panaflo L1A, which inaudible from 2 feet, even when running it alone in a quiet room. it has a low 24cfm flowrate, but more then enough for a p3. I would go with the volcano 7 (cuz its cheap now) or any socket 370 heatsink compatible with a 80mm fan.

I have a Dell 2 GHz P4 at work which has one (1) fan - a case fan ducting air from the CPU heatsink out the case. No HS fan.

Well, 2 fans if you count the PS fan.

A P3@500 generates maybe 20 watts. So yeah if you have a decent P3 heatsink, stick a tube over it with the other end of the tube attached to a case fan and you're done.

If you happen to have a fan on the HS already, you can probably just unscrew it and throw it away.

Now if your CPU heat is going directly out the case via an exhaust fan, your case temps will be fine and you could probably get rid of all the rest of your fans. Maybe keep one - on intake - to be safe.

I was cooling a 1400 MHz AMD T'bird (with generic 10$ heatsink) this way.
