I recently got some of this RAM. It says on the package KHX4000/512R CL3. The timings are 3-4-4-8. It is 2x512 MB.

Now I've read that there was the old PC4000 which had Samsung chips and would not overclock very well. These were replaced with the Hynix chips which performed better. Is there anyway to tell what chips I have other than removing the heatsinks?

if it has kingston branded chips im not sure.. if not, of course youll know.. also try overclocking .it u should get 260/270 minimum with the hynix. most of the older samsung wont get u much past 250
