hello. i'm new here and was wondering if this group could help me with a little problem i have.
i've put together this system:

AMD 1.2 TBird 266
Abit KT7A
128mb PC133 ram
GeForce 2 MX 440
Soundblaster Live MP3 + 5.1
LG 8x4x32 CDRW

this is my first experience with AMD and the KT7A and the system exceeds my expectations... until I install the SB Live!
when i install my SB, programs freeze during installations and while editing the registry and sometimes the system will just crash out of nowhere.
i've tried a bunch of pci slots, they all seem to have the same effect.
i should also add that I'm using a very old version of Win98

any help is greatly appreciated... i can't wait to get this system up and going!!!

This is a very well known error with the Via chipset drivers. Its the southbridge thats causing the problem, apparently, and its known as the 686B bug...The fix, which is what i did...and my mate, is to download the latest 4in1 drivers:

Install them and then you're away!

P.S> i recommend you visit www.viahardware.com cos theres some useful stuff about the VIA boards there.

....nice doin business with you

I agree with the above info, but the fix does not do well for everybody. I had to go to a Hercules soundcard for this reason alone. They have a great line of gaming cards with Dolby Digital 5.1.

You might be running into an IRQ conflict with the resource hungry SB Live. Try the above and if that doesn't work make sure your SB live is installed in pci slot 2,3, or 4 (counted from the agp slot). 1,5, and 6 are shared slots in one form or fashion.
