would it be a good idea to set up a seperate lan just for folding, like 10-20 old pcs all folding? kinda like a cluster just not. sorry if this doesn't make sense
 
Not much sense in that if you ask me... if the pc's are old, they wont produce that many wu's, and not nearly enough to burden a 100 mbit lan.

I think that it is just fine to incorporate your dedicated folding rigs into your main network if that's what you're asking.
 
even with 11 folding instances running at home, and wiht 9 of them on good machines i did not notice any bump in my network usage, from them (love my cisco router that tells me usage :D)
 
Folding WU's make up very little of network traffic, although if you have a LOT of computers they can run up a little as a cumulative score. I never noticed it sending but I'm only folding on one machine..
