I've been messing around with my sister's laptop for a few weeks now trying to figure out what's wrong with it. A few months ago, it suddenly died, and all that anybody could figure out is that it's somehow harddrive related. After much screwing around with things, I think I know where most of the problem stems from, but not why.

When the laptop is on AC power, it runs absolutely fine. Surfing the net, installing programs, SETI, it all is great. Once I let it go to battery power though, problems are garunteed to happen. I'll get one of two BSODs (0x0000007a, or another I can't rember) randomly while using the computer. The BSODs all say to suspect the HD or cabling, but SMART shows the drive to be fit as a fiddle (as well as repeated diagnostics), and neither issue would only present themselves on battery power.

The only thing I can think of is that the HD isn't recieving enough power while running off of batteries. However, the rest of the system runs fine, and the BSOD can occur at 90% battery remaining just as easily as 10%.

What do you guys think it might be? I'd test my own theory by getting a new battery, but I don't have $80 to blow on one :D Any other ideas on where to look for possible solutions???

Might be a problem with the power saving options? Maybe try turning them all off or something so the drive doesnt spin down?

Probably not. It has issues rebooting after BSOD, and even sometimes refuses to boot from battery. But I'll try it and see what happens :)

one thing is to turn off the all the power options settings in the control pannel. Tryto upgrade the bios also and see. ANy before you go to replace the battery why don't u take into a service entre and cecked it out? Well then you'll save money in there know?

Well, I set all the power options available to no timeout, but it still gave me a BSOD after a while.

I've updated windows and all the drivers with the stuff available from Sony and other manufacturers I could find (I had an earlier problem with the laptop that was fixed with them), as well as gave it the most recent BIOS flash. Still the same cranky laptop. As for having a service center check it out, the nearest one (according to Sony anyway) is a state away :D
