It depends on the unit and it's interface style. Most of the laptops from that era used either a 2.5 inch HDD style connector or a modular interface, unfortunately not the same as a current Ultrabay interface. I'd open the laptop and verify connections prior to taking any steps. The 4x-8x cdroms were also usually large case units and, though they are usually the same width as later drives, they were 1.5 to 2 times taller than later models, so check sizes on the new drive as well.

Most laptops have different interface connectors. Some laptops do overlap though. The best bet is to look at the interface, and try to match it up as best as possible. I know my old NEC was not really compatible with any other companies for the interface was unique to say the least.

You just have to see the cd drive to tell, unless it is a cdrom drive from micron chances are it won't fit, I'm not sure why laptop makers all use different connectors for drives, it is quite a pain when upgrading.

On some of the newer drives, 24x CDs and forward usually, you can change the interface on the rear of the card. This is particularly true in the case of removable drives. They are often the same drives as sold for micro chassis PCs and in some cases server components. They merely change the fascia and the interface and sell the same product to two or more different markets.

does that mean that a newer dell laptops cd drive will have a chance to work in a Compaq Laptop? Or backwards?

edit:\
If anyone knows about the dell Latitude C910 (removable drives) is it possible with this one?

How about batteries?
