Hey all,

I will keep it short, here where i work most of the users are using laptops from 1.1GHz to a couple of 2.4GHz the problem is although they leave their laptops at work (only allowed to remove them if they use them in the field) i have noticed that they (especial the >2.0GHz) become very very very hot. I have stopped them from folding... em... like months ago but it seems that all we purchase (ok, all i purchase) are laptops lately. Would you bring them back online or just leave them alone? Could be as much as 10GHz probably more but not all would be 24/7 :(

I have heard of laptops frying after long periods of time running at 100% load. They weren't really designed with 100% 24/7 in mind. I guess I wouldn't risk it.

All I can tell you is my experience. I have ran FAH on my PIII650 for nearly 2 years now and almost everyday of those two years. I also have a friend of mine here at work that runs FAH on his 2.0Ghz P4 laptop 24/7 now for about 6 months with no issues in sight.

Hope this helps.

You could always set FAH running as a scheduled task or something, that way you could schedule some breaks in between bursts? Or else set it to not use more than 50% of the CPU or something. It'll be slower obviously, but 50% of something is more than 100% of nothing!

I think maybe you should look at reducing the load on the CPU, but not by removing FaH altogether.

In the GUI version I think you can set the percentage CPU that FaH will use. Try something like 75% and see if it makes a difference.

I fold on a 1.4 p4 just about 24/7. I've noticed that it becomes a slug after things start to heat up, so I think 100% util may be a bit more than it is designed for. IMO, I agree - drop it back to 50 or 75%.

Another 5-7.5 Ghz aint nothin to sneeze at!

I fold on my P4 3.06HT laptop... it does have a massive HSF though for a laptop. Most laptops should be ok with 100% load all the time, the CPU's are designed to throttle if they get too hot.
