Recently my screen just turned black, when I restart the laptop the screen lights up for a split second, although fairly dim, how do I know whether it's the inverter or CCFL?

It's a Toshiba P200 1EE

If you're getting light, I would bet that its not the ccfl. Have you hooked it up to an external monitor?

Yea, I done that the display is fine via vga, I have took it to a friends laptop repair place, he has switched out the ccfl and inverter, and no go..

so it's just a case of checking all the wires and connections and hoping for the best.

If it's flashing then most likely it is the board, but you can't be sure without taking the screen apart and checking the bulbs for black marks(burned out)

I just replaced the ccfl bulb in a toshiba a215 about 5 minutes ago. And it turns out that wasnt the problem.

Don't do it unless you absolutely HAVE to.

try replacing the inverter first, for the toshiba it was only 8 bucks, and they are much easier to replace than the ccfl.
maybe open it up and try to listen to the inverter- mine made a somewhat inconsistent high pitched buzzing. wish i noticed that before.
