Good evening to you. After getting my new slackware/winxp dual boot working (after 18 repartitions and installs :D) I'm having trouble getting my orinoco wireless card and nic to get an IP address during boot. They are recognized at boot but I have to run "dhcpcd eth1" or 0 to get get it working. This also does not work if the wireless card is not installed during boot or an ethernet cable is not plugged in. I think hotplug isn't working right. How do I get both the ethernet card and wireless to obtain an IP during boot? The distro is slackware 9.1. If you need any conf files posted please ask and I will. Thank you.

Unrelated: I've got another problem (didn't want to start a third thread and look like I was spamming) I got my nvidia driver loaded and the 3d acceleration works fine but when I log out of X I don't get my command prompt. The screen is blank but I can still type commands and it works. I can run reboot and poweroff and ls and whatnot. I just can't see anything ont he screen. Here's what my XF86Config file looks like if there's something wrong with it.

the rc scripts prolly diff. but try

rc-update add net.eth0 default
rc-update add net.eth1 default

(this is after configuring that net file, i think its /etc/conf.d/net)

works for gentoo, dunno about slack, sorry

When the install program ran the network setup, how did you setup the machine, DHCP or static?

Off the top of my head, the rc file to initalize the network devices is /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1, so you'll need to look at that file. Editing the script and figuring out what you need to do should be pretty self explanitory, since there are lots of comments left in the file, at least it was like that in 8.0/8.1. I'll have to boot up into Slack, to tell you exactly what you'll want to do, so I'll have that in another post.

I set the network to use DHCP during the install. I'll look into the rc.inet1 file and see if I can't get something working.

I'm pretty sure rc-update is a gentoo-specific tool. etc-update is also.

kaltag: Can you elaborate on the X issue? Does anything appear on the screen? What if you switch to a different virtual terminal (ctrl +alt + f[1 - 6])? How are you starting X?

For the X issue: durring the boot I get a normal prompt and everything in the command line works fine (I can see it) login works fine and I can do all I want until I load X then if I exit I get nothing back on the screen but the commands still work. I startx using "startx" after logging on as either root or a user.

For the X issue. What happens when you type reset at the prompt after shutting down X?

For the wireless nic issue. I looked through the script, and it was a bit different than the script in 8.0/8.1. Still, it should automatically detect, detect, load the drivers, and get and IP address for both cards, at least that's they way the script makes it appear. The easiest solution would be to add a line at the end of rc.M (or possibly rc.local0 along the lines of
/usr/sbin/dhcpcd eth0
/usr/sbindhcpdcd eth1

that does the samething as you would, but now it will run automatically after you login.

Do you have hotplug support in your kernel? If not, you might want to recompile a new kernel with that support in it.

I got the wireless working right now :D. I still don't have a prompt after quitting X though. I typed reset but it didn't do anything. Is it possible that the nvidia driver is having some sort of issue with the framebuffer command line that lilo runs? How do I get lilo to load linuz with the standard (non-framebuffer) command line?

Yeah that framebuffer might be an issue.

Add this line vga = normal and rem out all other vga options to get the standard console.
