"Logitech CEO Hanneke Faber recently discussed the possibility of one day selling a mouse that customers can use "forever." The executive said such a mouse isn't "necessarily super far away" and will rely on software updates, likely delivered through a subscription model."
"To be clear, Logitech hasn't announced concrete plans to release such a product. But Faber seemed optimistic about the idea of a mouse that people never need to replace."
"Speaking with Faber, Decoder host and Verge Editor-in-Chief Nilay Patel suggested that a "forever mouse" could cost $200." + subscription

My ideal mouse would not require software running in the first place. Logitech are not too bad in that, since you can save configuration to the mouse then ditch the software. My main gaming system uses Razer and unfortunately I do have to keep their software running otherwise settings are not applied. The only minor plus for that is it saves my settings in the cloud, so when I moved the mouse to my new gaming system I didn't have to wrestle putting in all the settings again.

Basically what value does the software give? Enough to be worth paying for?

If they were to offer a "forever mouse" then it has to have "forever" hardware replacements included in the price. Most common failures for me are the mouse buttons start doubleclicking just after warranty runs out, and the wheel motion also degrades after some years.

Maybe it is time for MS to push hardware vendors to a standardised mouse configuration interface. I've seen Windows can already have some control of RGB.
