This is my new system and I'd like some input on O/S.
Pro's, con's.Any input would be helpful.
Thanks,You guys have been alot of help in the past

go for Windows XP pro - the most stable OS ever and compatible with all software present and future (unlike Windows 2000)

I have me in my computer that is running now,and have not had any problems with it.so my ? is will this run on my new system.

Im going to have to disagree with Cooler666 I think that Win2KPro is better than XP, it doesnt have all of the driver problems just as stable and everything else, plus when the FBI makes microsoft come out with security patches that might be a warning to you that there were still a lot of bugs when they released it so how do you know they have fixed them all by now?

I like Windows XP.
If you have 98 or higher you can just buy the upgrade version.
You don't have to upgrade an older version tho, just boot from your CD ROM with the XP cd in there and do a full install.
During the loading process it will ask you to insert the older version cd to confirm you already had it, you WILL need the key-code too, then it will ask you to switch back and continue to load XP.
I reccomend that you let it do a fresh install by letting it partition and format your hard drive. (I'm sure you know that you WILL lose all your data) You will be less likely to have problems. Use NTFS. :)

PS: There are some hardware compatability problems. You can go to Microsoft's site first and do a check on your system first. Most of the problems can be corrected by updating the drivers or in one case that I had with my HP printer I went backwards on the driver and used on from a different model. Don't let this scare you. It's not all that bad.

2k pro is good

i havent had any software issues with it and i play a lot of games

i dont trust xp yet

ill give it a while to cure then mabey ill swing over that way

Try linux?
Even dual booting with windows. I would give it a shot - if it doesn't work then it can be removed.

WOW! Lots of help, thanks. But what about Windows ME hows does that rate?

In short, it doesn't. The only decent OSes are 2k XP and Linux. Me and 98se are IMHO a load of rubbish.

what do you mean Windows ME? If thats what you mean, try to stay away from it I personally think its Microsofts worst version of Windows

ME is by far the worst OS ever, i mean you might as well use Windows 95

I don't know why some people are saying they have driver problems with Windows XP. I've had none on 5 machines and unlike 2000 this is compatible with games, and looks damn better too.

OK,I've been running windows me on my computer for six months
and have not had any problems running unreal,ut,Ect.
I run a athlon [email protected] kingmax pc150 256,asus A7V133-c
Voodoo 5000,sb live.So why all the bad press?

you obviously didn't try many games, this game compatibilty is the biggest problem of Win 2000, apart from that its a very good OS, but Windows XP is better.

FreeBSD! and its not linux!

Depending on your feelings for XP its pretty much that or Win2kPro. Personally I like Win2kPro more than XP but neither is really better than the other.

Alright if you are looking to stay with MS products I would recommend the following;

XP ; If you are planning on running games and multimedia to the max *It is basically win9x/2k merged into one o/s combining the best of both.

2k ; If you are planning on doing things that require alot of stability such as running servers, game support is and can be sketchy at best.

ME ; Come on guys! ME is just 98SE with all the patches pre-installed anyone tells you different you know better. Altho 512MB of ram may be overkill for ME.

Non MS Products;

Mandrake 8.1 ; Good starter os lots of hardware support and user friendly to install

Redhat 7.2 ; Another popular Linux distro also user friendly

SuSE 7.3 ; Have yet to use but have heard great things about it

If you have anymore questions please feel free to ask

J
