Lynsys WRT54G

Hi guys,
I am having problems w/ my present router so I am gonna get a new 1.

What do u guys thing about the WRT54G?? How is it compared to the WRT54GL?? whats the difference?

I've had two, loved them both. Its a really great router and you can use custom firmware.

Any difference between the 2? 1 is $15 cheaper.

WRT54G is probably a later version (i.e. 7 or 8) and the WRT54GL is "linux" based and should be easier to flash.

Its a really great router

Main selling point is to get custom firmware such as DD-WRT on them

the wrt54g v5+ has less memory (8mb instead of 16mb I believe), which limits what firmware it can run.

The wrt54gl is the same thing as the wrt54g v4. It has 16mb and can run the custom firmware(s) without an issue.

The Asus WL-520GU is also a good router to be flashed with open source firmware. Last I knew the USB port wasn't working with DD-WRT. I have no clue if the stock firmware is any good.

If you are going to run DD-WRT or want to use detachable antennas then get the WRT54GL. Really for any situation I would recommend the WRT54GL over the WRT54G. You just have more upgrade options available for only paying about $10 more.

i just got a wrt54g v8 for my dad and was able to successfully flash dd-wrt on to it.

i'd give a quick read thru http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Linksys_WRT54G/GL/GS/GX before purchasing. and i'd definitely plan on running dd-wrt as the firmware.

Tomato is another good firmware, I recently switched from DD-WRT and prefer it. It has less features than DD-WRT but it still has more than I use. And I really like the bandwidth monitor it has.

I've just called customer support for Belkin, and God, that was frustrating.
The guy had a thick accent and I couldnt understand what he was sayin. He was totally helpless!!!

I wonder what he is getting paid for. He basically tell me to do things which I have done already, then he couldnt do anything more.

Anyway I am gonna go out and buy a new router tomorrow. I've had enuff of this old one.
