I installed md8.1 upated all security , normal updates and bug fix's.
My ? is it safe to update security for kernel from 2.4.8.36 to kernel
update 2.4.8.34.1

I have seen others have problems and I am real Newbe.
Thanks anyone for your help.

It's safe if you do it by hand... just don't use the Mandrake Updater. If you use the Mandrake Updater, you won't be able to boot back up after upgrading your kernel. I did this twice... figuring the first time was a fluke.

I was told there is no reason to update the kernel if you already have version 2.4.x. Anyone have any comments on this?

2.4.x will run all the latest programs, but I think 2.4.17 or something had a few security issues. 2.2.x is the most stable kernel - I am using 2.2.20 for a little project.
