MAXIMUM refresh rate = use lower refresh rate for safety?

Idk why but i always think that refresh rates are like overclocking. the higher you set them the hotter your monitor gets.

My crt monitor gets really hot when i set it to its maximum rate so i set it 1-2 lvls lower.

i dont notice my lcd monitor getting hot at all (very odd imo) but i do have it set to it's 2nd highest lvl.

i would love to set it to it's highest lvl but im afraid that it will

1. shorten the life of it.
2. get really hot
3. dmg video card

anyone know anything about this?

With LCDs it makes no difference what you set it to, they all get the exact same result. With CRTs, you will want at least 75-100hz, but any higher is usually overkill. As long as your CRT supports it, then you will be fine. As for it being hotter at higher frequencies, I can't answer that one.

Nahhh, Refresh rates sharpen the contrast of the image. Won't kill the monitor or video card. My max res on my LCD is 75. it's on there 24/7. No harm at all.

I was wondering the same thing, however I have run my cheap old gateway 17inch CRT at its maximum of 85 Hz since the beginning of 1997 without problems. If it is supported by the monitor, it should be fine. Unless your monitor is getting insanely hot, I wouldn't worry about it. I ran mine at its maximum and in the summer it gets over 100 degrees up here in my room and it was fine.

Offtopic: Does anyone else get a headache and strain on their eyes if their refresh rate is set to the maximum (75+) ?

I do. Then agian i've had mine set @ 60Hz for so long i think it's just me not being used to it.

When I had my old 19" CRT I just selected the "hide modes this monitor can not support" option and then picked the highest refresh from that list. Which for me was 85hz.

ya i run my Dell 17in crt at 85hz all day long... i can handle anything less, everything just runs so much more smooth with it at 85...

It used to be that setting a monitor to a higher refresh rate than it supported would damage it. These days, most monitors just won't display anything. They're smart enough to know not to destroy themselves. Refresh rates on LCDs don't really mean the same thing as they do on CRTs, so don't worry about it there.

I dont know if this helps I had a belinea 19" CRT, and I ran that at 1280 x 1024 for all its time I had it, and it was really a good monitor. Then I moved, and withing a few months, I noticed no matter what the refresh rate the monitor ran at, and no matter which machien it ran on it started giving myself, and others headaches.

Also the guns at the back of the CRT monitors will have to work alot harder, the back of monitor your are bound to get it going a little hotter, if you get it going faster. Laws of pysics already have had that one sorted for a while, faster you go more energy has is used, and more energy is displaced. Thats what I understand any how, I maybe wrong, if I am, I will hold my hands up if I am :D
