I was in the market for an ATA/100 controller to upgrade from the ATA/33 I have on my motherboard. I wanted a Promise one, as I can easily mod it to a raid controller down the road whenever I feel the need. Well, I got impatient, and picked up a maxtor ATA/100 from the local Future Shop (Figuring I can always use this in another computer, and get a Promise controller leater). Well surprise surprise, The Maxtor controller is really a Promise controller, but it seems it just has a different BIOS.

IS it possible to flash a Promise BIOS into this thing? has anyone had any experience with this before?

I have the same card. I think the bioses were the same when I got it. I checked the version of mine and the one on the promise site, and they were identical. It's probably a direct copy of the promise card except with a maxtor label on it.

I flashed the latest Promise bios to my controller, works great. Maybe i'l mod it later. Gee good thing i spent the extra 6 bucks on that 2 year warranty....Yesterday
