my maxtor 520498U8 40 gig hard drive has been messing up lately, so i went to format it, it got to 99% done, and said that this drive cannot be formatted....i restarted the computer, and everything is still on the drive...i run error checking..nothing wrong, i ran defrag, nothing wrong (i am running winxp pro) so i go back into the windows formatting program (when you put the disk in when you restart) to try to reformat and install winxp again, and it actually formats this time, but stops again at 99% saying the drive cannot be formatted because of errors on disk...by the way, there is an 8 mb unpartitionable space on my hard drive...and i have no idea why...any ideas? well, since the big partition is empty now, i go to install, and it asks me to format again, well same thing...so now i cant install winxp...GREAT. i called maxtor and got a diagnostic program and its writing zeros to the drive now. any ideas why all this happened (why it wont finish formatting)

I dont know why it would do that, but I have had windows put 8MB unpartitioned spaces on my drive too - never caused me a problem.
