Hi guys. I've recently been hearing some clicks from my two Maxtors in raid 0 and was wondering if this is a sign that they are goign to die soon. One of them was even RMA'ed not too long ago either (about 4-5 months). Any suggestions on how i can tell if they're really dieing on me or if one of them is dieing soon? Thanks.

if i was you, i'd start making backups just in case. presonally i dont like maxtor, because of a couple of bad experiences

It's a good idea to make backups whether or not your hard drive is making funny noises... I'm in the process of setting up an old PIII running Linux as a dedicated backup server.

PowerMAX is Maxtor's diagnostic utility. You can download it from their website.

You may also want to take a look at the hard drive diagnostics sticky.

Wow. It's been 3 hrs while doing the advanced test on one of my 120gb ones. How long does it usually take for a 120gb drive? (it's a 7200rpm one if i haven't mentioned that yet)

edit: i'm on my brother's laptop...

How did it go? If the drives passed check all connections.A short or loose wire anywhere in the chain can cause this from the drive stopping and restarting while running. It will damage the drive(s) if it continues.

Ironically, it finished 5 minutes after i posted up that post above hehe. It turned otu there were errors on it and it fixed it for me. Phew. Thank god for diagnostic utilities! :p
