"Microsoft has removed the 'BypassNRO.cmd' script from Windows 11 preview builds, which allowed users to bypass the requirement to use a Microsoft Account when installing the operating system. This change was introduced in the latest Windows 11 Insider Dev preview build, which means it will likely be coming to production builds. "We're removing the bypassnro.cmd script from the build to enhance security and user experience of Windows 11," reads the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26200.5516 release notes. "This change ensures that all users exit setup with internet connectivity and a Microsoft Account." Since the release of Windows 11, Microsoft has made it hard to use the operating system with a local account, instead forcing users to log in with a Microsoft Account. Microsoft says this is done to make using the company's ecosystem of cloud-based features and services easier, such as using your account to store BitLocker recovery keys."

"While Microsoft is now removing this script, they have not yet removed the BypassNRO Registry value. This means you can manually enter the following commands to achieve the same functionality as the now-removed script.

reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OOBE /v BypassNRO /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
shutdown /r /t 0

If you feel comfortable modifying the Windows Registry, you can manually create the BypassNRO manually using Regedit, which can be launched from the Shift+F10 command prompt. Unfortunately, it would not be surprising to see Microsoft remove the functionality of this Registry value in the future, making this technique no longer work."

Simply pick add to domain instead of MS account, and use your user name. Go to the next page without adding the PC to a domain. Done. However, it works only on Win11 Pro as Home has no domain functionality.

Sometimes they're legitimate cases to not need to do that.
Sometimes? Vast majority of Windows users (excluding companies/commercial) have zero interest in connecting to a M$ account, there's just no point. Even If you have an Xbox you'll connect from there, not on your PC?

Hopefully someone will find a way around that if they do remove that script on future releases, I have local accounts on all my computers as I see no reason at all to be signed in to M$.

I use my account :chair:

But I bought the Dolby stuff, it does suck to enter a password every time you boot. Eh.. not a big deal to me..

I even run a stock windows setup

I'm kinda begging them to require one with the next version (W12). That might be what forces me to go full Linux.

I feel WINE has matured enough that I can get away with that for the occasional fl Vidya game.

A workaround I have is to login with an online account the first time, then immediately create an offline account and ditch the online one.

The only time I ever used MS account was to use "free" Xbox game pass, which has to be on a new account. Still can't believe how broken the XB/Store app system is I wont touch it for anything I care about.

I used the latest version of flyby11 and it was a very smooth win11 installation via the windows server installer and his preinstallation scripts.

you can skip that password stuff if you're the only one who uses your pc. put netplwiz into the run box and you should see your options, only works if you don't use a pin
