Howdy folks,

I'm looking for a new home for my PIII/800 133mhz CPU. The old one is a piece of crap. I'd like to know what chipsets you've had good results, and more importantly you've had BAD results with. For instance I've run across lots of badthings written about the VIA Apollo Pro 133 chipset.

So... tell me what ya like and what ya hate on mobos...

A bx chipset is the best way to go, but finding one that supports the electrical pin out of the coppermine p3 is not easy, I know that the asus p2b from some revisions onwards does (I think it is 1.12 onwards) Also as far as I know the abit bh6/bh6 II will support it check out asus and abit's web sites to confirm and if the web pages are inconclusive email them to find out

Maybe a abit SH6 its the only 815 motherboard that uses a slot type cpu.
I have one and its almost as fast as my old bx was.
4fps in q3, 133fps vs 129.
Its rated for 133fsb cpu's and has agp 1/2 fsb speed plus agp 4x and a built in ata 100 controller.

the only motherboard that meets your description is
the soyo mobo.
it is the SY-6BA+100
supports up to 933 mhz p3 with 133fsb
the bios sets the pci bus speed from 33 to 41 mhz regardles of the front side bus speed.
plus it has onboard raid.

Good thread!!

There's a bunch of boards that would work with that P///. I have a P/// 600E, so I'm interested in the same things in a board you are....

Right now, it's running on a Asus P3C2000. This is a bugger of a board, kinda finicky with the ram it will run, and, because of the i820 chipset, has the Memory Translator Hub, which slows down the memory somewhat.

The P/// ran well on my Soyo 6BA+III, but the Soyo didn't have the vcore flexibility (only + 10% max, 1.65v + 10% = 1.81v) that the Asus has. I did run the P/// at about 850 MHz on the Soyo, but I knew a bit more vcore would get much better results. I believe the 6BA+100 will have the same vcore options as the +III and +IV does. (default, +2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10%) The good part of the +100 is the ATA100 capability.

I've never owned an Abit board, so I'm not 100% sure on the vcore options, but I really like the options available in the SoftMenu III.....FSB settings from 83 to 200 one FSB at a time. Good BIOS. Again, not sure on the vcore settings available, though.

Asus......I'm looking long and hard at the SH6 myself. Looks to be a killer mobo, but try and find one!! I can't seem to locate one that the seller doesn't want rights to my firstborn for.... I've seen this selling for $180 or more....YIKES!! More than I want to spend.

IMHO, the biggest determining factor I look for is the vcore adjustability. This is critical in the overclocking of intel processors.

Yeah, The Via Apollo Pro 133 is not the best in the world. I had this on an A-Trend mobo a while back. Does indeed kill the memory bandwidth. They improved on this, with the 133a, but it still can't hold a candle to the BX chipsets.

Decisions, decisions.... This gives you an idea on what I look for. Having the 600E (which run at 133 FSB, is basically the equivalent of your 800EB), I have very similar requirements. Hope this helps you determine what you need.... Good luck, and happy board hunting...

Mr B

I like Abit motherboards. I've had 3 of them now and all have performed above and beyond the call of duty. The Abit BE6-II is a good board and is the one I usually recommend for slot one chips. But, with a P-III 800eb chip, I really think the Abit SH6 like Palcid says is the better choice. It has bus dividers better suited for high FSB speeds. You'll need that if you intend on overclocking much. I don't have much experience with Asus, but they'll have a model or two that will work also.

Great link, thanks!!

Just hope they still have one when the $$ frees up here.

Thanks again, good lookin' out!

doh! Shouldn't have posted that til the end of the month when I had the cash myself, hehe. I hope Mwave tosses me a commission ;)

Hey Mr. B...

If you end up with one let me know... I would like to compare to my Asus P3V4X... I think I have tweaked the Via chipset to its full potential & would like to compare to the i815...

I have a P3 650@949 or 975 or 910... depending... I really think this chip could do better than a G consistently with the right mobo combo.... oh and a Alpha P3125s too...

Kris

I know for a fact that Skip has one of these (SH6), and I think DocClock does too. there's two or three people in here that have one, actually.

I know EXACTLY what you mean, with changing a board and getting more from the cpu.... I changed my board, and hsf with my C600@1009, from an A-Trend/Via Apollo Pro 133 chipset, Gorb hsf, to a Soyo 6BA+III with a PEP66T.

8c cooler, and 4 FSB faster. (C600 @ 1053).

I think this Asus might be holding me back. It's a P3C2000, with the i820 (Camino) chipset. The one with the MTH (Memory Translator Hub), so you can run SDRAM instead of RDRAM. Kills the memory bandwidth similar to the way the A-Trend did.

I'm torn between the SH6, and a BE6 II. It's probably going to be whichever makes it's prescence known first, when I have the $$ in hand.

Ask Skip and Doc on the SH6...you'll get an answer now, instead of whenever I get the $$

Mr B

I say go Abit and go BX, but whatever you do stay away from RDRAM, I have the stuff and it sucks(to put it lightly)

I finally figured out my generic motherboard. It's a... <drumroll> Jetway! Never heard of em? Me neither. It's a VIA Apollo Pro chipset, and the damned thing won't run my P3/800 at 800 stable. ;p I I tried running it at a 100 FSB with the RAM clocked at Bus + 33 with no problem, so I'm pretty sure the memory's not the problem.

Since this sucker is a hybrid with both a Slot 1 and a Socket 370, I think I'll retire it to a nice Celeron system for internet use, and get my P3 a real home.

Thanks all for the board/chipset suggestions.

I too have the Abit SH6 !! This is the board to get if you have to have a slot 1 rig.

I was running a Soyo SY6VB4-133 - junk !!!!

The SH6 is rock solid, has everything but AGP Pro and RAID.
Real sweet board, you won't be disappointed.

Well... got my shiny new SH6 out to install it last night...

and promptly broke it.

I've exhausted my patience with computers for a while (which sucks, since I'm a network engineer) and I'm just gonna be happy with my K6/500 system and my laptop. Can't bring myself to shell out more cash or put any more effort into it.

i think that i440BX is the fastest motherboard so i would choose an Abit BH6-II .. also, they say that VIA Apollo Pro 133A is not an excellent chipset, but ASUS P3V4X is a fantastic motherboard and i dont no why .. i 've seen benchmarks that P3V4X goes faster than an ASUS CUBX .. also, it has agp 4x ..

How did you brake it?

I picked up a Soyo Slot 1 mobo for my PII450 and managed to burn up my processor the first night. Went ahead and shelled out the $$ for a lovely new PIII700E due here today. I was quite frustrated. I picked this Soyo board for a few reasons. Less than 100$$$, 1/2 AGP divider, 29 FSB settings. and I had good luck with Soyo in the past. Again the VIA is not the fastest out there but it does offer some good features for the $$. The biggest draw back is as Mr B said the V settings. 10% is just not enough. I have been looking for a way around this.
I do understand your frustration but we must press on.

Good luck...
