I hope someone can help. I just recently put the following system together and everything works perfect except for my DSL.

My system has all the latest drivers and the DSL drivers and Modem drivers all installed successfully. In addition the system connects to my service provided perfectly.

The problem starts when I open Internet Explorer. The start page (or any page) will not load and my connection to the server is dropped. - I get the Illegal operation message w/ Win 98 1st Ed, and Win ME says that the server dropped my connection. When I try to re-connect the error says "can not tap line" or something like that.

I've tried the same ADSL modem and software with my other computer and everything works fine. I've also tried to use the DSL w/ both OS's (win 98 and ME) on the new computer before loading any other drivers. - Still no luck (thinking it was a driver conflict.) I even tried to disable the on-board sound.

I don't think this can be cause by an old version of Internet Explorer because I've tried it with Win 98 and ME and they both include different versions. (I haven't tried Netscape or any other applications yet). My only other thought is that there is some sort of problem w/ this mobo's USB connection. I've updated the USB driver for the MOBO w/ the most current ones, but still no luck.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe USB devices take a share of the voltage to the computer. Should I increase the voltage setting on the MoBo? If so, how much? Does anyone have any other suggestions?

System is as follows:

Soyo 6vca mobo - 2aa5 bios, 4.25a 4 in 1 drivers, v4.04e AGP VXD driver, v1.3a IRQ Routing driver, v1.6 PCI Bridge driver, v1.08 USB Filter Driver.

Elsa Gladiac Geforce2GTS 32 DDR with latest detonator drivers

Efficient Networks Speedstream 4060 USB ADSL modem - 011-1059-001 driver (latest for 98 & ME)

ISP DSL Network Software - Enternet 300 (latest version for Win Me)

Audio - On MOBO

RAM - 256Meg PC133 (tried at both 100 and 133 bus speed)

Processor - 650 MHz Coppermine 100fsb (not overclocked yet)

OS - Win ME (currently)

ewwwwwwww yuck. dont get usb for internet connections.
they may begood for things like cheap scanners and cameras but they are not reliable for using the internet.
they can also only go about 12feet before the information gets degraded.
get an ethernet one. they are timetested. usb is too iffy

My guess would be USB too. USB is good for Digicams (over Serial port connection), and cheap scanners, mice, or joysticks but for communication, go for a decent Ethernet Card (not a free in a box of cornflakes one) solution.

If you do insitst on USB:

What about IRQ conflicts with your USB ports?
Have you got any other USB periperherals hanging off the back?
What is your USB speed set to in the BIOS? There are two options (24/48Mhz) Try adjusting this.
Does your other computer have an Intel chipset board?
Is your other computer closer to the DSL socket?

I have had modem problems of recent too after resetting my BIOS after an extremely overamibitious overclock. I have the socket 370 version of your motherboard, the SY7VCA.

It would seem that anything that want's toi connect to the internet wants to share an IRQ with the AGP card.

What to do is:

1. Set your Modem/Network card to IRQ 11 in Power Management.
2. Disable VGA IRQ administering in PnP/PCI config
3. Cross your fingers
4. Cross your legs
5. Connect to the internet
6. Well I tried my best!!!

The other computer is physically located to the DSL Modem, but they are not networked so I doubt thats a problem.

I have no other USB devices. (I hate USB as well, but thats the equipment I got with Pacbell DSL. If worse comes to worse, I'll buy a new dsl ethernet card.

I check the IRQ's once. There wasn't a conflit then, but the usb could be sharring an IRQ with another device. I'll check that now. I'll try adjusting the USB speed as well. - Thanks!

It is definatley the usb cable modem or network card. Take that thing off and trash it. I had problems with my cable modem exact same symptoms as you untll I switched to a pci card. The cable modem guys caught my gf at home I wasnt here and when I got back they had given me that usb crap. I didnt think about it until I couldnt stand it any longer. I tested with friends pci card no problems. I took it back and demanded a pci card. Now all problems are gone I never loose my connection. It was also a via board I felt like it was conflicting with the mouse or other usb device because once it lost signal the only way to reconnect was to shutdown and reboot.

It More than Likely is NOT the Usb modem itself causing you the greif, What IS causing the Problem is your Enternet 300, It's a nightmare to use Kind words. I think this is the link you want= www.RASPPPoE.com If it isn't, email me and I will get it for you. I had the 4060 initially, and with Enternet, I could do nothing,( just like you), after Downloading Raspppoe, and then deleting enternet, installing raspppoe exactly as the website will tell you,( Print the instructions out ), You will then have a great ( somewhat great ) Internet connection.... It eliminates all the overhead, and works with the 4060/ I'm living proof....Like I said/ feel free to email me on it with questions.
