I just upgraded my system with an Asus A7m266/ AMD chipset and VIA southbridge. I reformatted, installed all my drivers and I cannot play Quake3. As soon as I begin the game the monitor goes to sleep and I have to "reset" . Also, the DirectX Display test fails because it also puts my monitor to sleep! I can run 3dMark2000 and 2001 without problems though(8884, 4419) I have a Geforce2GTS and I tried reinstalling(trying different ones too) the drivers a few times to no avail. It failed with the mobo drivers from the CD and the new 4 in 1 4.31 drivers as well. What's the issue?? Please help.
Thank you

open display properties and go into advanced , then on adapter choose optimal on the refresh rate settings , (your monitor may look funny ) , but start at the lowest resolution and set all of the refresh rates manually , (example 75hz) go through all of the resolutions your monitor will do and set them ,play the game ,I hope this helps ,

I tried using all the refresh settings, I still have the same problems. When you said "set them" you meant try all the settings with the game right?

also make sure you have all the MOBO updates...i had a problem with my Via KT133a, it would blacken my screen at the start of a game...sometimes even killing the system totally...just check with your MOBO manufactorer then with the chipset makers to make sure you are up to date

apply the AGP update first...i d/led the seperately then it worked on mine...the 4 in 1 never worked for me either

I am having this problem with my Asus A7V133 also. The screen goes blank and it kills my computer. I think it's an AGP problem with the motherboard. I'm planning on RMAing it to Asus once I get a new EPoX board to replace it... I have another Asus A7V133 that runs fine, but this one has problems no matter what I try to do.

MY MB is updated. Before I reformatted, I had simply installed the Mb without reformatting and everything worked great. I reformatted hoping to prevent any future problems... to only give me immediate issues :( I'll try messing with the AGP drivers, I have the latest though...

I removed and tried various versions of 4 in 1. Tried installing just the AGP drivers first, (same problems) then the rest of them(same problems). Nothing seems to be effecting my sleeping monitor. It can't(I hope) be a hardware issue because it was working ok before the format. DRIVERS SUCK! Anyways, what shall I try next???
Thank you

no I mean do this out side the game , start at the lowest resoulution and work your way up seeting them all manually , the screen may look funny till you get the correct refresh rate
here is a pic so you know what I mean

Have you tried setting the Screen saver to "None" and in power set to always on, and NEVER on all three settings?

Yes, I've tried turning off all the monitor and power settings.

To the previous message, yes I did adjust the refresh rate outside of the game.
What in Hades is going on?? :(

you have to adjust it in the same resoulution the game runs at , just go through them all

I would hope the game is running at 600x800, it's my desktop resolution. I can't see the game to make any adjustments inside it. The monitor immediately goes to sleep. Even if it wasn't at that setting , it shouldn't go nappy nap.

OK I think I'm on to something. When starting a newly installed game, the default resolution is 640x480 correct??
When I , again, started Quake3(with the hardware accelerator one notch above none) the driver load up screen froze(paused) allowing me to view what was loading. THe game WAS attempting to start up at 640x480. So, I went back and set my desktop resolution to 640x480 and my monitor went to sleep!! Had to go to safe mode to get back to 800x600. Why is my monitor suddenly not capable of 640x480? Should I set my refresh rate to default then try it again at 640x480 or how do I tell my monitor to accept 640x480?? Thank ya..

WOW!! I should have tried toplay a game before writing the previous note! I NOW CAN PLAY!! YEE HAA!! I noticed the colors were a bit richer after my little experiment with the desktop setting. Thanks WILDONE
I now understand where you were coming from...Duh :)
Thank ya!! Thank ya!! Now, LETS GO KILL!!!!! :)

Glad I could help , I knew what I wanted you to do but was doing my best to make it clear , my monitor done the exact same thing , 3 days without cs sucked ,let me tell ya , but I couldnt figure out why I could play ut and not cs and it was because ut started at 800x600 and cs started at 640x480 @ 150mhz which was alot more then the monitor could handle I guess ,again glad I could help

I couldn't play Q3 or UT, and I was waiting to clear up the monitor issue before reinstalling Half life/CT. I missed CT the most too.

Godspeed,

Quake may be looking for open GL support, for which you will need the latest detonator 3 drivers from Nvidia.com

download and install those, it worked for me, with a 2MX card...I had the same problem ...cept with Serious Sam as the game instead...

Good Luck
