Hey there everybody. I just put my modded Radeon 8500 in my system and put in a 120mm fan plus moved around some of the other fans in my case. The trouble is that even when I just have the mobo with the hsf and the video card fan plugged in and nothing else; the fan begins to speed up and it is some what like a sci-fi battery charging up right before it blows! When it hits the top, the HDD light starts flashing like mad and the fan starts pulsing. I tried different combinations with the HDD, CD-ROM and FDD plugged and un-plugged plus tried different fans being plugged in and others not; still the same problem! I have tried 3 diffent P/S's and they all do the same thing. Any ideas on what is causing this? Do you think my mobo just when out? What about the CPU? I put a new coat of AS 2 (ordered the day before AS 3 came out) on the CPU die and made sure everything was setting right. I found that the very center of the die didn't have any AS on it for the first time! System had no problems until now. PLEASE, HELP!!!

PS~ there is no beep code at all at start up?! Shouldn't there be if there is a problem like this?

Can't be certain, but it kind of sounds like a short on the mobo somewhere. The only way you can find out is try your components out in another rig, and use the process of elimination.

You could try removing the MOBO from the case and placeing it on a non-conductive surface. I like to use the box and bag that the Mobo came in. Hook up only one item at a time and try different combinations. Removing the Mobo from the case will eliminate the case as the source of the board shorting. You might see if the fans act up without using the 120MM fan. If all else fails, then return to your original configuration and see if it acts up. You never know what could be causing it. I had an chipset fan keeping my computer from turning on. explain that one. Check everything:confused: AND WEAR AN ELECTROSTATIC WRIST BAND. IT ONLY TAKES AN ELECTRO STATIC SHOCK OF 30 VOLTS TO ZAP A COMPONENT AND YOU CAN' T FEEL THE SHOCK TILL IT REACHES 2,000 VOLTS!!!

Thanks for the input guys! I took it in to my local computer store and had them test it for me. Found out that the CPU shim I had put on it had allowed to much room between the HS and the die, which caused it to melt down! Had to upgrade to the AMD Athlon 1700+ which is now in my sig. I also got an all copper heatsink with a Delta Black Label that doesn't scream like a Delta!?!

It is usually the stupidest things that cause the worst problems. like my issue of the chipset fan. and your issue of a thin flimzy copper shim. I laugh at the dumb things that we do to our selfs. lol.:D
