So anyone know the basic's of testing a power supply? My machine would'nt boot past the GUI load. Post was fine--CPU fine---but then crash to beggining post again.....over and over.

Then>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SMOKE I am really hoping it was just the power supply, but I suppose it could be the Mobo too :(

Really appreciate any help

Cheers

First, do a visual inspection of the entire computer.. Make sure that the smoke wasn't coming from anywhere else.

Usually, where there's smoke, there is black, or some kind of discoloration.

Use your nose. You will smell an acrid smell near the point of burn.

If you find this in your PSU, time to get a new one.. anctually.. If you find this anywhere, it is time to get a new whatever it is..

To test the PSU, I know you can short 2 pins on the MOBO connector to jump start it. (search the thread or ask Larva. He seems to be the resident PSU expert. Check his sticky)

If it starts and no smoke, use a multi meter and test the pins on a molex. orange to black should be 12, red to black should be 5. I'm not sure where to test the other voltages. Check your MOBO for a power connector schmatic (sp) and transfer that to the connector. Test each pin to ground (black wire usually).

Good luck..

If it is your MOBO that smoked, you'd be better off buying a new on instead of trying to fix it..

Thanks for the reply Palee.....

And yes, the PS is smoked. Antec True380 as well :( 1 year old

Does that usually mean the Mobo is toasted too or not?

The board's probably ok but only way to tell is try another PSU you know works.

For a replacement I suggest a Sparkle/Fortron 350w unit with the 120mm fan ;)

Ya, but the Antec has a 3 year warranty and the Mobo lead is sleeved. I've heard the Sparkle's and the Fortron's are pretty killer though. I'll warranty this time but if I ever have another problem then I'm done with Antec.

It's a 50/50 with the mobo. I would generally say nothing happened to it, but.. As posted above, try another PSU on it..Best advice we can give at the moment..

To short the PSU to run w/o having it plugged into the mobo......i know its green wire to something, and im nearly positive its green wire to ANY black wire..

Got the RMA on Friday. Only asked for the serial number. Said they would send a brand new PS

Me hopes my Mobo isn't toasted :p
