I'm a newbie, so go easy! Here's what I'm planning but I will listen to any suggestions to the contrary.
FIC AD11 mb: Ali and VIA chipsets getting bad press
and ASUS doesn't allow multiplier settings.
1 gig 133fsb T-bird AXIA
128 or 256 mb crucial memory, (what's sufficent for win 98se?)
3d prophet 4500 (got great bang for the buck review)

Objectives: good gaming box and as future-proof as posssible (i.e. will support a Palomino upgrade some day).
Thanks for your expertise, Jumper

The graphics card maybe great bang for the buck but if your going to be spending some money on a new system you owe it to yourself to shell out a little more on the graphics card and get a radion or geforce2. You can get an OEM 32mb ddr radion for $100 or a leadtek GTS pretty cheap if cost is your thing. 128mb Ram is enough for win98 but I would go with the 256 personally now that ram prices are so low.

bassicly what he said. Except the part about the KyroII. Did you know that the KyroII outperforms the GF2U is a couple benchmarks? Yeppers. SO If I were you Jumpers, I would stick with the Prophet 4500 (KYRO II), because that is an EXCELLENT choice!

go with 256mb of cas2 ram for future proofing. That card has gotten great review, but the Radeon or Geforce2 still outperform it most of the time, but if the KYRO people tweak the drivers, you could have one kick@$$ card.

I don't think anyone has any cas 2 DDR out yet, just 2.5, but I'll look around. No one has bad-mouthed the FIC mb which was my biggest concern because I never read about them in any of the forums. Thanks guys,
Jumper

The Eopx 8KTA3 i believe now has a BIOS update so it will support palimino overclocking. Thats the mobo i'd go with, now that it has future support for Palomino overclocking ...EHHHH!!!!.

WTF? i just realized this was the intel mobo thread. Oh well.
