So I've just changed my server from Win2003r2 to FreeNas 8.2. I have 3x 1TB Hitachi drives using the ZFS filesystem in RAID5.
Server specs are in sig (Dual 3.2Ghz XEON, 4GB RM etc)
Now when I started restoring my back up to the new array, I used another machine and my backdisk was connected via USB2 (so about 40MB's max). Now I was just wondering why the servers RAM usage was nearly at max after about 15mins into the restore? I mean the three disk array should have no problem keeping up with 40MB's so why hold it in RAM? Seems very odd behaviour, the RAID array will sit idle till all the RAM is nearly full then the disks will start to write.
I was wondering how to work out the CPU usage chart to? I mean it goes upto 200%??? I am yet to see it go over 25%. And will FreeNAS benefit from having HT enabled or disabled?
Also is there a way to monitor smart information or HDD temp in Freenas? Smart is enabled on all three drives.
I'm maybe just missing a couple of settings but I'm a FreeNAS noob So any advice would be great
oh, one more thing. I am yet to do my research on the ZFS filesystem, but is it possible to add another disk to the array to gain more space without having to build the array from scratch? Cheers
EDIT: Ok I've hit a major problem. When the backup tried to restore a large file (ISO) it just fills up the RAM on the freenas and it stops responding. I've checked every setting I can find and really dont know why the NAS isnt writing to the disks as often as it should be.
