:p Got a little creative with the title there...

Nee ways, my cd -rw drive (Lite-on 40X24X40X or somting) decided to up and stop working randomly yesterday. I burned a few CD's (about 3) and on the 4th it just decided to not work. It starts, gets about 5% of the way (in Nero) and then stops. It is just acccesssing the harddrive, the little locked light for the burner doesn't come on and the HDD light just stays on, my music skips too and everything else pretty much freezes. Then after a lil while it erros and Nero tells me this in the little log window thingy:
Cacheing somthing or other....
caching more stuff done
Burn process started at Xxx (xxxx kb/s)
LITE-ON LTR-40125W
*SCSI Command Aborted
LITE-ON LTR-40125W
*Invalid write state
LITE-ON LTR-40125W
*Could not preform EndTrack
Burn process failed at whatever wahtever.

I don't think I changed anything between the burns, it just sorta started it. I have tried a few differnty CDs and differt brands of CDs.

Any Ideas?

EDIT: I also tried the windows burner thing and it has the same symptoms.
I tried restarting as well.
Now it seems to be acting weird and won't go back in (nero crashed again when I was trying without winamp running).

I am not too hot on updating my firmware on that... I almost killed it last time I did it... Ill do it if no-one else has any suggestion... I'll check for bad clusters or sectors or whatever too but I have set the temp space that it writes to and reads from to differnt places on one drive as well as other drives so I doubt that it is.

try another burning program like alcohol 120%, my computer did the same exact thing *even on 5%* on my old plextor 16x. Moving to alochol, and just burning with alochol *magically* solved the problems. who knows.

Is this just one thing you are trying to burn that doesn't work or does it work sometimes and not others, or is it just not working at all now? I saw the word "randomly" in there but it seems like it just isn't working anymore. If that is the case, try a bit of canned air to blow out any dust or such.

Or, maybe it just died. Hardware is like that. Works one minute, dead the next. Reseat the cables. They tend to get unhappy if they are never exercised. If air and reseating doesn't work, and you haven't changed anything on your system, lean toward the death concept. I read some post on the CDR newsgroup a few months back. A guy tried updating his MB firmware, checked RAM sticks, this, that, etc. He spent days trying to figure out what was wrong. I wrote in asking when he was planning on trying a new burner for $20. A new one worked fine.

There always seem to be rebates on these things that knock them down to $15 or so. Get a new one. Yours (40x) shouldn't have died this fast but some will. I have burned literally thousands of CDRs (really, over 5000) and have gone through a few burners in my time. Started with a 2X Mitsumi or something. Most have just been replaced by faster ones but some did just up and croak. Or, at least they stopped working and a new one worked fine.

Are you trying to burn an image file, data CD, or audio CD? I had the same problems with my old 12x CD burner whenver I tried to burn an Image or Data CD, but all was well with Audio CDs and it turned out to be the burner :(

Anyways, just food for thought

just data, if it doesn't work for that it's useless to me:p

Ill try unpluging it and stuff later, it's kinda a pain in the *** right now so I'lll do it next time I take my computer apart. As for buying things, I have other stuff on my list first, 40 bucks is a lot to me.

I also tried updating the firmware and it doesn't seem to work, like it won't run... I re-downloaded it too, and still it wouldn't. I am gonna keep trying on that too.

what kind of media are you burning on?? And have you gotten one of those compressed air thingies and shot it into the CD drive to clean it out, that cna help a ton as you would be suprised how dusty they can get.

Cd-r's, 3 differnt brands and 2 or 3 differnt disks of two of the brands. I might try to clean it out... perhpas thats it but I kinda doubt it.

I have gotten that same error on my lite-on 32x12x40x burner in Nero. It didn't acctually ruin the disc though. I was burning two files; it completed burning the first, and gave the error on the second. I can read the first file on the disc with it, just not the second. I later discovered that the second file was horribly fragmented, so fragmented it was beyond the ability of any defragmenter to fix. See if you can burn a disc with different files that what you originally did and report back.

I am pretty sure I alread tried that but I will give it a shot again.

No luck, I have done a it with a number of differnt files on various drives before and after defragmentation.

I've just had a similar issue with an MSI drive, in fact two.

Couple of days ago I went to burn something on my DVD burner, just a CD. The drive is an MSI DR8-A. It just seemed to die, wouldn't recognise any discs or anything. I checked that the cables were all firmly seated and found no difference. So took the drive out and I got an RMA number earlier.

However... I swapped in my old 52x MSI CD-RW drive for the mean time and it has issues as well. It will read discs ok, and I did get one burn out of it, but the rest just fail. Nero 5. So I tried another burning program, www.cdburnerxp.se (freeware and very good) and it had issues as well.

The upshot of that is I'm now wondering if my DVD burner is dead or not.

What sort of problems could I be looking at? Should I try an XP repair install or something? The last thing I did before having issues with the drives was to install iTunes. Could it have anything to do with it? I'm looking for suggestions folks.

On the hardware side it could be:
Drive
IDE cable
IDE connector on mobo
Power supply issue

Software:
Nero/CD Burner XP/InCD
ASPI layer thing
imapi.exe thing

As for the last two there, I'm not really sure what they do, but I know they have something to do with it all and hence if they went wrong then they could have influenced it. Didn't want to start a new thread either, so though I would just bump this one.

P.S. Have a hard drive issue as well now... can't get XP to run disk cleanup... But it is a SATA drive as opposed to the same IDE channel, so appears merely coincedence.

try to burn at a lower speed? i had a 52x burner that couldent burn at 52x..it would ef up whenever i tryed..so i changed the burn speed to 32x and magically it worked perfectly.
