MCP655 leaks out of the box

I'm a little frustrated right now. This all began with some screw casings breaking on my Mag 3, and a decision to give it up after it's been serving faithfully for a good couple of years. I saved some money and decided to spring for a MCP655, as I didn't want to be at college all year wondering if my pump was going to leak. I'm on a time frame and already about two weeks behind on finishing my water setup, so I got an MCP655 from CrazyPC and had it shipped 3-day so that I could get it this week and get things together this weekend. Great people over at CrazyPC, btw...I recommend them.

When I first got the pump, I did a sort of leak test out of curiosity...I usually blow or suck into one of the tubes and plug up the other end. If I can maintain pressure, the setup is probably doing alright. I noticed right away that this pump wasn't keeping up pressure...air was passing through it just fine. I opened it up and it didn't seem like the most watertight design to me...I thought there was supposed to be an O-ring. I figured I was missing something, tightened it back down nice and tight, and gave it a test run, thankfully outside my system.

Sure enough, water was leaking out at a pretty decent rate (made a good pool in a couple of minutes) without the pump even turned on. I took it out of the loop and took it apart, and referenced this handy article:

Yup, missing an O-ring. Nowhere to be found. Looked through all the Swiftech accessories and the box it shipped in, poured all the peanuts out onto the counter...nothing. 100% less O-ring, just like I thought.

So now I've paid a bundle for this pump, $15 for 3-day air to assemble my loop this weekend, and it's completely unusable. I'll have to wait until mid-week for a replacement part from Swiftech, I'm sure.

Anyway, just a heads up...you might want to check for that O-ring. I like Swiftech products and haven't had a problem in the past...and this is likely a weird fluke. But be careful...I'd hate to have tested this in a system. 24-hour leak test first!

I could be wrong, but I believe that these are all assembling by Laing overseas. i.e. just a factory fault. Swiftech would be able to fix it for you though, but I can almost assure you that Swiftech would not have assembled the pump themselves.

If you wanted it to be up and running on Monday, grab your Yellow Pages, look up "Bearings Supplies" for local supply stores. Drive around, take the pump with you, and they'll find the O-ring to fit and likely charge you $1 for the trouble.

Up to you.

I had the same thought. Thanks Cathar.

both my mcp-655's had a loose retaining nut, and one of the two was missing 2 of the screws that held it to the mounting bracket... oh well

for you, i'd say run out to home depot or an autoparts store and search for an o-ring thats the right size
