I posted this before, but I thought that I would get more help with a new thread with a better title.

I bought an FX 5900 and an NV Silencer 4.
The directions don't make sense.

They say to place three rubber washers between the card and heatsink, which puts about a centimeter between the heatsink and the RAM and GPU.

When I put no washers between the card and heatsink, the RAM touches the heatsink, but the GPU does not.

Also, I managed to break one of the screws when I screwed on one of the nuts.

What could be the problem?

Thanks

*Sigh* Another victim of Arctic Cooling. It looks like you'll have to shave away some of the ram pads and face the thing because it was either made wrong, is warped, or you card is slightly different from what they designed it for...

Some questions:

1. Can I return it to newegg even though I broke the screw?
2. The directions said to add a thick coat to the RAM sinks and a thin coat to the CPU, so I put the silicone stuff on the RAM sinks and AS5 on the CPU. Should I try putting a thick layer of silicone stuff on the CPU and AS5 on the RAM sinks?
3. If this doesn't fit, is it likely that the ZM80D-HP won't fit either?

I'm just going to try using a thick layer on the GPU and a thin layer on the RAM because nobody's responding.

lol man... its only been a couple of hours. You really arent being descriptive enough with the details of your problem. could you show us a picture of some description?

Where are you putting these rubber washers?

If you broke the screw i would NOT put it on. You take the chance of burning out your GPU. I don't know if Newegg would take it back or not, your best bet is to email them and tell them in detail your situation. I have had great luck with Newegg's RMA service and have never been turned down (could be i've bought so much off them but who knows) for any RMA. Just don't request an RMA and send it in without letting them know you broke the screw off, because 99% chance they'll send it back to you and you won't get anything for it.

DO NOT put a thick layer on the GPU you will end up INSULATING the GPU instead of cooling it!!!!!

you want to put as thin as layer as possible on a CPU / GPU - ram i dont know.

I took some pictures and sent them to my cousin so he could host them.

Until then, I'll try to clarify what I meant with words.

The directions say to place three rubber washers between the card and
heatsink, which puts about a centimeter between the heatsink and the
RAM and GPU.

When I put no washers between the card and heatsink, the RAM touches
the heatsink, but the GPU does not; the GPU is about 1.5mm away from the heatsink.

Arctic Cooling told me that I should add more thermal paste on the RAM to fix this problem, so I replied to that email telling them that the gap was between the GPU and heatsink rather than the RAM and heatsink.

The nuts don't allow screws to go through them; you can't see the screw through the other side. I tightened one too much, and broke off about 2.5 mm of screw, which is now in the nut.

The directions said to put a thick layer on the RAM sinks and a thin layer on the CPU. I used a thick layer of the thermal paste that came with the heatsink on the RAM and a thin layer of arctic silver on the GPU.

And in case anyone even tries to email Arctic Cooling about something, only expect replies on Thursday.

it is almost as if the card maker made their ram too igh and not in spec, or u got a bad silencer...

your best bet is to make sure the GPU is cooled for sure, otheerwise i am really not sure - can u send those pics to the card maker and the Silencer company?

I kinda have to ask the same question as Sentential.
Where are you putting the rubber washers? when i put on mine nv5 silencer the rubber washers went on the back of the card to protect the nut from hitting the back of the card , not in between the HS and the card.
I would have to think your washers would go between the nut and back side of the card also.
In any case good luck with the problem you are having.

The directions say to put them between the heatsink and the card, but the only place that it would make sense for me to put them is behind the card.

But even if I put them behind the card, I get the gap.

This card is supposed to have a 6 year warranty. Do you think that covers the screw that I broke?

I just realized that I had read the directions incorrectly. No washers are supposed to be between the card and heatsink.

This doesn't help me of course.

If you explain the situation to Arctic cooling about how you broke the screw i think they'd understand and give you an RMA. I don't know why its not fitting right mine just slipped right on no problem. Then again i am using a 6800, but from remembering my old 5950u it would seem just as easy.

RMA it (if you can) and hopefully the new cooler will fit right w/o the gap.

The cooler doesn't look warped or broken or something.

Do you mean that I should RMA it to Newegg or Arctic Cooling?

First try to Newegg. Request an RMA, then email them with your RMA number and your situation. Newegg is pretty good with RMA's (atleast for me they have), if they turn you down then try Arctic Cooling.

Key is to just be honest... I am sure one of the two will give you an RMA

What a funny twist:

I just learned that my old video card is supported by the new nVidia drivers, so I didn't need a new card at all.

I'll definately return the heatsink now if it's possible.

Should I try to get a repair or a return?

And what should I do with the video card?

ill take the videocard =P

newegg will definately take the cooler, maybe you will have to pay shipping
