got a new system specs below. I put the mobo in then mounted the p4 2.4c with retail heatsink. then put memory in. then put in hdd then ran all cables. so i tied to turn it on. it didnt go. then again and again. so then i tried a different power supply and it went on for about 4 seconds and then shut doww its self. after the 4 seconds the processor went up in smoke it was a white/grey smoke. so i unplugeed it and then sent the parts all back to new egg. hope they will help me out

I rma the the P4 2.4c reatail heatsink,
asus p4c800 E deluxe,thermaltake 480 watt power supply,radeon 9600xt to new egg

ahould i also rma the ocz pc4200 512mb to excaliber pc i dont know if it still works cant test anywhere

did i do what i was supposed to or could i have done somthing else and what caused my cpu to go in smoke

Its very likely that you did not mount in your heatsink correctly which you might have probably fried your cpu... Make sure you mount your heatsink in correctly and did you apply some thermal compound to the IHS ? Oh and install your ram and cpu w/ HSF outside of the case, its just easier.

uh oh

well, did you use artic silver III? i have heard that it can fry chips, but other than that, i think that the heat sink was not on good. you have to be sure to get thermal compound on it, they come with a stupid pink thermal thing, scrape it off and use good ol' white thermal compound.

Probably fried the mobo not the chip. I've never heard of a P4 burning up like that.

Yea, your motherboard probably went bad. I've only burned a P4 up once, and that was because I put it in backwards to see what would actually happen (the chip was already dead).

Yea I would of sent it all back but probley fried the mobo with some static electricity or possibily the CPU was DOA (Dead on arrival).

Hope its a quick turn around for you. I hate being without a high powered computer for more then a couple hours unless its on purpose.

Should you always apply the thermal grease?

yes, the thermal grease acts as an interface between the Processors integrated heat Spreader (IHS) and the base of the processors heatsink. This is needed for the heatinsk to make proper contact and so that heat can be passed fro mthe heat source (the processor) to the heatsink.

BTW, for all the people that in this thread have said something along the lines of, "You motherboard has probably been fried" say what you know, please back yourself up with evidence as to why you think this from what the person what told you about their problem. Please dont make assumptions as this can lead the person with the problem donw the wrong track and they may end barking up the wrong tree.
