i havent altered anything as far as core speeds, etc. im using the same fan arangement, and the room temp isnt any different. however, MBM5 reports my idle temps as 46-47, as compared to the 38-42 ive always had. all the fans are working, anything in particular i should check for?

Anything blocking the fans? IDE cables infront of them? Are all of them working at the speed they were before? Is there dust in the heatsink and maybe the fan holes and powersupply intake? Is it really running idle? Did you move you case or is there anything on the outside blocking the fan intake? Is your comp sitting on top of a heating vent? Those are some things you may want to check for.

EDIT: did you swap a mobo or do a BIOS upgrade? Sometimes things fluctuate with the temp readings as they mess around with that stuff in BIOS fixes. Also, did you start folding for team 32? (you should do that :D) Just to be sure you really are at idle, hit ctrl alt del and see if your CPU usage is at 0. What about the new Window's media player? I downloaded version 9 and when playing music it runs my CPU at 50 percent now for some reason.

Hmmm...if no significant changes have been made to the system recently, I'd look for dust as the problem. I've experienced similar "unexplained" temperature rises in the past, and dust is usually the culprit. That fine layer of dust sitting in heatsink fins can wreak havok with regards to heat disipation.

I'd try blowing everything out good with a can of compressed air and see what happens. If that don't do the trick, I'm not sure what to tell ya. I know I'm always astounded when I clean my system out...hard to believe so much dust can collect in a computer case. They're like dust magnets. Check the mounting of the heatsink, have you moved the rig around recently? All good suggestions from @md0Cer.

Good luck to ya.

What does Task Manager say your CPU usage is?

Maybe you have a nasty of some sort that has hijacked your CPU and is running at full gallop.

Thanks.

I tried using compressed air to blow my heatsink out once but man, that stuff was glued to it! Next time I go to clean it I might throw it in the dish washer. Not the whole comp, just the heatsink lol

the abit mobos have been notorious for very inaccurate temp readings, especially with diff bios's, if u updated bio,s that may be the problem for the differnces in temps

Yea, especially the NF7's. The ASUS boards do that too, they have inaccurate temp readings and fixes in the some of the BIOS's. I remember becuase I saw someone having the same trouble with their ASUS board after a BIOS update. I'm pretty sure it is either this or dust. Usually I would say a fan died but you said it was working. Make sure to check the CPU usage though. BTW, if you usually have idle temps and are idling alot, start folding to help reasearch and a cure for diseases and the ocforums team!

so pollux
what did you find?any dust?virus?
did your temps return to normal?
hope you will let us know because i had/maybe have a similar
but more extreme prob.

there seems to be some dust on the fins of the heatsink, but i lack compressed air. im also using the original bios, 6 i think. should i upgrade to a newer one? my cpu is at 45c now, 0-2% load. i know a sudden blast of dust didnt come into my case, b/c this temp increase occured in one day.

theres a few things that bother me about MB5's readings:

1st, it says my cpu is clocked at 2112 mhz, when its really at 2200mhz.

2nd, my enermax (intake) fan is shown at 1569rpm, when its an 1800-2300 rpm fan. i didnt even hook up the controller for it, so shouldnt it be running at full speed? or is it, but its being reported wrong.

3rd, the core is read as having 1.62 volts, i havent changed the voltage at all. shouldnt it be at 1.65 volts?

the case temp is 27C, and the CPU is 44C, currently under 0-4% load. i did blow out the little dust that was there, too.

1)my clock speed is often a lil' off but that seems like a lot
2)my fan speeds are read as double what they really are
3)your vcore should read more like 1.68 i would think, mine is always a lil' higher than what we set it at(1.65 is default)
4) i really hope someone with more knowledge will step in and help us both out!

I'm kinda at a loss Pollux, not sure what to say. I didn't realize this temp change occurred in just one day. Had thought maybe it was gradual over time, and you had just noticed it.

If I were to trouble shoot the same problem on my pc, I'd first look for any physical/mechanical problems or recent changes; such as the pc being moved, jarred on accident, slow fan going out (though they usually make noise), or possibly unnoticed temperature increase in the room (can have a very significant affect.)

As far as the bios goes, since you haven't changed it and it worked before, I doubt that's the cause of the increased temperatures you're seeing. My general rule of thumb with the bios is to always keep it updated to the latest (and known stable) version. Then again, many prefer to stick to what ever version they know works works well, and never change. Probably wouldn't hurt to upgrade, but from the given information, it doesn't seem to me to be the source of the problem.

I hope it's something as simple as an unoticed increase in ambient room temp, failing fan, or HS that needs to be re-seated. If there's no other problems with the system, stability issues and such, there's probably not much to worry about. However I can understand the frustration. It would be driving me nuts to figure out what caused the sudden change...wish I had some better advice for yas.

I feel for ya man...Hope you get er' figured out. :-/

just an idea pollux
power off, loosen the two mounting screws on the zalman and give it a little wiggle while applying a lil' downward pressure on it.my original install of my zalman proved on removal a lil' bit of cratering in the heat sink grease which would suggest it boiled and bubbled toward the top side of the die.this could indicate i used too much grease even though i thought i followed instructions to a t.

i think its the room temp, since its night, my temps are back down to 41-42.

So you mean you solved it? If so, congrats!!! Room temps have lot's to do with your system temps ;)
